This year, I chose not to post for Earth Day because EVERY DAY should be Earth Day.
The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, when a US senator organized a national demonstration to raise awareness around environmental issues. Today, it’s become a marketing moment for brands to plug their ESG initiatives and shamelessly promote their products. Feels like greenwashing to me.
Vogue Business said it best, “Earth Day began with purpose, and that purpose did not involve selling things... Using consumerist culture to mark Earth Day is directly at odds with the underlying spirit of the global event. It promotes consumption as an answer to a problem that was caused, in large part, by overconsumption. And it perpetuates the notion that brands can tweak their way out of a mess that requires systemic change to solve.”
Weeks later, this article stuck with me.
If we don't protect our planet, all the positive strides we've made for humanity will be rendered meaningless—there will be nowhere left for us to live in the not-too-distant future. My hope is that every industry leader will pour additional resources into inventions and innovative sustainability solutions sector wide.
Together with our collective actions, both personal and through
our business, creates a ripple effect of positive change. It's all about caring
for our planet and, most importantly, each other. Each and every day.
