Driving through the Southwest when I was younger, I remember passing massive solar projects like Ivanpah and being in awe of their scale. At the time, they represented the cutting edge of renewable energy. Now, just over a decade later, some of these projects are already becoming obsolete. Ivanpah, once a flagship for concentrated solar power, is set to shut down part of its operations in 2026. The reason? Technology has moved on. PV solar has become far more efficient, scalable, and cost-effective, leaving CSP struggling to compete. This shift is a testament to how quickly the renewable energy sector evolves. What was state-of-the-art a decade ago may not be viable today. As the industry continues to innovate, the focus must be on building solutions that don’t just meet today’s standards but can stand the test of time.
