⚡RF engineers exploring next-gen antenna designs — this is worth a look. A recent study explores Laser-Induced Deep Etching (LIDE) as a breakthrough method for fabricating dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs) — especially in the mmWave and Ka-band range. Unlike laser ablation, LIDE uses ultrashort pulses to locally modify fused silica, followed by chemical etching. The result? Ultra-smooth, high-aspect-ratio features with sub-30 µm accuracy and no microcracks, even in brittle glass. Researchers successfully etched cylindrical DRA cavities with clean 22 GHz mode excitation. The reported Q-factors suggest a real path to rapid prototyping and low-volume production — where tight tolerances and speed matter most. More RF teams are now turning to LPKF ProtoLasers to bring this level of precision in-house. By skipping long fab cycles and enabling complex geometries, they're accelerating antenna development without compromising performance. 🔍 Can laser-based glass structuring unlock faster, cleaner antenna manufacturing? 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gKAuiykv #RFdesign #mmWave #PCBprototyping #LaserMicroMachining #AntennaEngineering #LPKF

About us
LPKF Laser & Electronics North America specializes in the sales, distribution, and service of laser-based fabrication and process solutions for demanding tasks in printed circuit board technologies and microelectronics. We are a subsidiary of LPKF Laser & Electronics AG which was established in 1976, and has Global Headquarters in Garbsen, Germany – a quaint industrial town near Hanover. The company is active in the areas of electronics, motion & control, laser plastics welding and photovoltaics. Although LPKF focuses on prototyping and micromachining solutions for circuit carriers, it also tailors leading edge systems for precision drives, plastics joining, solar cell technology and measurement solutions. Fun Fact: LPKF stands for "Leiterplatten-Kopierfräsen", which when translated means "circuit board copy milling".

Laser Micromachining Enables the Future of Wearable Hydration Sensors Measuring skin hydration accurately has been a long-standing challenge in dermatology. Traditional methods, like electrical impedance-based sensors, only penetrate the outermost 15µm of skin, limiting their effectiveness in diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and xerosis cutis. These approaches often require bulky equipment and controlled environments, making real-time, at-home monitoring difficult. Now, a breakthrough: wireless, battery-free hydration sensors developed by researchers at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Northwestern University. These sensors can measure skin moisture up to 1mm in depth and wirelessly transmit data to any NFC-enabled smartphone—eliminating the need for traditional lab-based diagnostics and enabling precise, real-time monitoring in any setting. A recent Science Advances study highlights how precision fabrication played a key role in making this innovation possible. One critical tool? The LPKF ProtoLaser U4—used in the early prototyping stages to pattern double-sided copper-clad laminates (Pyralux AP8535R, DuPont Inc.). The U4’s laser micromachining capabilities allowed for the creation of thin, flexible circuits, ensuring the device’s biocompatibility, accuracy, and seamless skin integration. Check out LPKF's latest advancements in LIDE technology. https://lnkd.in/gpbxrc6F #LIDE #MicrosystemTechnology #LPKF
Relaunch I coined the term LIDE® (Laser Induced Deep Etching) back in 2017. Possible reminiscences of Deep Reactive Ion Etching (DRIE) were quite intentional. At no time was there any doubt for us that LIDE is for glass what DRIE is for silicon. Therefore, I am extremely pleased that with the relaunch of our LPKF’s Vitrion website we can now present the full range of possibilities of LIDE technology. Have you ever wondered if there isn't a faster and more cost-effective way to develop microsystems? Find out more… https://lnkd.in/ezTaC_wq
