In an era where the CDC labels prescription drug misuse an epidemic—with millions using medications off-label and thousands trying them for the first time daily—educating our patients on properly handling medication is critical. Legacy Pharmacist Mario Gutierrez, PharmD and Pharmacist Intern Gowri Kalyani recently led an engaging session on medication safety at Walk30 Houston and YMCA Connect. With over 20 attendees, they focused on proper medication use, identifying risks of misuse, and promoting safe treatment and disposal practices through real-world examples. Highlighting common issues with opioids, sedatives, and stimulants, they emphasized that clear communication with health care providers is key to informed, safe decision-making. Breaking Barriers: Expanding Access to HIV Treatment Through Innovative Pharmacy Practices At this year’s Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacy (TSHP) Annual Seminar, Kevin Aloysius, Director of Pharmacy Operations, and Yen Nguyen (Ngoc-Yen Nguyen), Director of the Medication Adherence & Access Team (MAAT), took the stage to share how our team is breaking barriers to HIV treatment and prevention. Their presentation, “Breaking Barriers: Streamlining Prior Authorizations and Launching Long-Acting Antiretroviral Clinics in Community Pharmacies,” highlighted innovative strategies to improve patient access to HIV prevention and treatment. Kevin and Yen emphasized key areas of impact, including: • The essential components and clinical applications of long-acting antiretroviral injectables • Best practices for streamlining prior authorizations to minimize delays and improve medication access • Steps to establish long-acting antiretroviral injection clinics in community pharmacy settings By addressing these critical challenges, our team is driving meaningful change—ensuring that patients receive timely, uninterrupted treatment. Public health efforts at Legacy Community Health - like eradicating measles - largely go on behind the scenes. So we were honored to be invited on CityCast Media, LLC. Houston as public health experts and advocates. Our measles expert, Dr. Sandi Cohan, and Lorena Mottu DNP, APRN, FNP-C, shared practical tips on why, how and when to get vaccinated. And how our clinics can help keep Houstonians safe and measles-free. For context: a second unvaccinated child with measles has recently died in West Texas, as the measles outbreak reaches nearly 500 cases and shows no signs of slowing.
