We are excited to announce another opportunity to take the free Youth Mental Health First Aid training on May 5 at Kitsap Regional Library's Sylvan Way branch from 10 am - 6 pm. Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. And, it gives you the skills to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem, or experiencing a crisis. This Youth Mental Health First Aid course is designed to teach adults how to help adolescents ages 12-18. A passerby observing them asks how they can possibly make a difference when there is such a vast number of starfish in the same predicament along miles and miles of beach. The trained counselors operating both the Salish Regional Crisis Line and the national 988 line are available 24/7 and are ready to work with you, assessing the needs of you or your loved one, and resolving the crisis by phone, or connecting you with services. When you call the Salish Regional Crisis Line, they may help you access KMHS crisis services including our Crisis Triage Center, Mobile Crisis Outreach Team, or our Youth Mobile Crisis Outreach Team, depending on your needs. If there is an imminent risk to someone’s life that cannot be reduced, helpline counselors will activate the 911 system, but more than 98% of contacts are handled without having to involve emergency services. Crisis can strike anyone, any time. Be prepared and save these helplines somewhere easy to access so you can get immediate intervention and support when you need it most. Today, folks across the globe are observing a #WorldDayofSocialJustice focused on the 2025 theme of “Empowering Inclusion: Bridging Gaps for Social Justice.” As part of our mission of offering hope and opportunity to our community through inclusive, compassionate, recovery-oriented behavioral healthcare, we collaborate with community partners and passionately advocate for our community with state and local lawmakers. Just last week, our CEO Monica Bernhard, Senior Director of Communications Mark Hughes, and Board President Laurie Kadet attended the Washington Council for Behavioral Health meeting in Olympia, where they met with leadership from other state behavioral health agencies and spoke with State Reps. Adison Richards, Michelle Caldier and Tarra Simmons, State Sens. Drew Hansen and Deborah Krishnadasan, and KMHS Board Member and State Rep. Greg Nance.
