In 1956, Kitchell broke ground on Motorola’s first research lab in Arizona, marking the start of a decades-long legacy at the forefront of advanced-tech construction. Across more than 18 projects, we delivered advanced facilities—from cleanrooms to scalable R&D and manufacturing spaces—while introducing innovations like Arizona’s first concrete tilt-up slab walls. Our work with Motorola was never just about the spaces, it was about building the future. That spirit of innovation still drives us today. Moderated by Kitchell CEO Wendy Cohen, the panel sparked meaningful conversation around career growth, mentorship, work-life balance, and the power of showing up authentically—reinforcing the importance of thoughtful leadership and open dialogue across the AEC industry. The conversation highlighted an important takeaway: the building industry is evolving, and it’s a promising time for talented individuals to get involved and help shape what comes next. Kitchell pioneered collaborative delivery in the 1970s, shaping Construction Management (CM) delivery methods through bold teamwork. The first real test? Three projects for DeVry Institute. Sam Kitchell, Vern Lindstrom, and the team worked side by side with CRS architects in Chicago, sketching concepts on butcher paper and refining estimates in real time. The result? A game-changing, transparent process that DeVry embraced for future projects. Vern later helped write the book on CM (literally) and chaired the AGC’s CM Committee. In year one of marketing CM, Kitchell won 22 out of 24 jobs. By the decade’s end, major clients like Armour-Dial were on board.
