🦺🛠️👷 “Safety Stand Down is a moment to take a time out and talk about safety. It's for us to put down the tools, get with the employers, get with our members, and take that moment to discuss safety in the workplace,” said Eric McClaskey, Safety Director for the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC). 🍁 On May 15, IUEC Local 82 hosted its third annual Safety Stand Down event at the Italian Cultural Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. “We started out small,” said Mike Funk, Business Manager from Local 82 who hosted the event. “Just in the back of our one office. We had a food truck, a few vendors, the companies, and it's just grown.” 🛗 The all-day event, which was set up like a trade show, was a joint venture between the IUEC and affiliated elevator company employers. It featured in-person speakers from the IUEC Safety Department, IUEC-affiliated company representatives, and people who had been deeply impacted by on-the-job accidents. 🛠 When we visited the Dorchester headquarters of IUEC Local 4, it was beyond rewarding. We witnessed the unwavering commitment of IUEC members towards safety and excellence. President Doug Cullington and the team, including Executive Board members, Business Agents, and Apprentices, shared their daily mantra: "To work safe is to think. Think before every move." ✅ What sets IUEC-affiliated companies like Schindler Elevator Corporation (U.S.) and Otis Elevator Co. – the companies Marykate Kelly, an IUEC Local 4 member, has apprenticed for – apart is that they prioritize safety and live it every single day. From wearing the correct PPE to meticulously planning every step of a project, Local 4’s apprentices and mechanics ensure a hazard-free environment, not just for themselves, but for everyone on the job site. 🌟 Celebrating its long-standing history since 1899, IUEC Local 4 now boasts nearly 1,200 members, each embodying the IUEC’s core values of safety, unity, and proficiency. 🪖 A Lift for a Vet isn't just about providing essential mobility solutions - it's about honoring the sacrifices of U.S. Veterans by enhancing their daily lives. Through the donation of equipment from IUEC-affiliated companies like Quality Elevator Co Inc, Elevator Control Service, a division of Elcon Enterprises, Inc.
