About us

The International Association for Identification (IAI) is the oldest and largest association of forensic professionals in the world. IAI members represent the international public, private, and government agencies that encompass forensic science and law enforcement. The active membership ranges from beginning forensic practitioners to seasoned and experienced practitioners, many of whom are considered forensic experts. Many IAI members are certified in their respective forensic fields and have received their IAI certification through a series of written and practical examinations. The IAI was formed to pursue the following objectives: 1. To associate persons who are engaged in the profession of forensic identification, investigation, and scientific examination of physical evidence in an organized body so that the profession may be standardized and effectively and scientifically practiced 2. To encourage the enlargement and improvement of the forensic sciences 3. To encourage research in the forensic sciences 4. To keep its members appraised of the latest techniques and discoveries in the forensic sciences 5. To employ the collective wisdom of the profession to advance the forensic sciences 6. To provide training, education, and the publication of information in forensic science disciplines represented by the association

I got to hold Henry Faulds's personal copy of Galton's 1892 book, "Finger Prints." In the margins of almost every page, Faulds had scribbled notes in pencil -- notes not at all complimentary to Galton. At one point in the book, Faulds had been so angry he had violently stabbed the book with his sharpened pencil, penetrating many pages. I could feel Faulds's angry ghost looking over my shoulder, screaming how he had been pushed aside and abused by Galton. Would you like to attend the annual conferences of the IAI from 1915 through 1958? You can! During those years, there were no breakouts of workshops, only one lecture hall where all of the lectures and meetings were held. A stenographer took down every word of the entire conference and the whole session was published as "The Proceedings." I was amazed reading some of those old meeting documentaries that the problems that were the focus of discussions in the 1930s were the same topics we were still arguing the the 1990s. I had the honor of being the IAI Librarian from about 1995 through 1999 and assembling the foundation of the current IAI Library. The library is housed today at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV, and is available to IAI members and other researchers. If you are researching a topic on fingerprints, crime scene investigations, firearms, or any of a wide variety of other topics in the IAI disciplines, the library in an invaluable resource that is available to you for free. I tried to write a brief history of the IAI Library for this post, but it was too long for the LinkedIn format. However, the attached PDF has that history, plus comments on some of our more interesting acquisitions, and information on how to access the collection. #theinternationalassociationforidentification #fingerprinthistory #henryfaulds #francisgalton #fingerprintlibrary

  • Certificates and Badges Would prefer individual workshop certificates in a more professional format. The conference team appreciates this feedback. We used a new program for Certificates for Conference 2024. We will take feedback to our software provider to improve the certificates. Name and Agency on badges needs to be larger and more readable We strive to put as much information as we can on the conference badge. Currently some badges have more information than others: Country flag, speaker/presenter, Student, etc. We will work to make the name and Agency larger this year.
