About us
Since its founding in 1936, the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston has shared the pleasures of reflection, inspiration, imagination, and provocation that contemporary art offers with its audiences. A museum at the intersection of contemporary art and civic life, the ICA has advanced a bold vision for amplifying the artist’s voice and augmenting art’s role as educator, incubator, and convener for social engagement. Its innovative exhibitions, performances, and educational programs provide access to contemporary art, artists, and the creative process, inviting audiences of all ages and backgrounds to participate in the excitement of new art and ideas. Spanning two locations across Boston Harbor, the ICA offers year-round programming at its iconic building in Boston’s Seaport and seasonal programming (May–September) at the Watershed in an East Boston shipyard.

"I do like to make things happen." And yes, she has. On Jill Medvedow's last day as director, we celebrate 27 transformative years during which she took the ICA from a "scrappy" itinerant exhibition space to an internationally recognized incubator for contemporary art, performance, ideas, and education on both sides of Boston Harbor. She built a museum where art serves to engage, bring people together, build community, and share a moment of reflection, joy, or inspiration. And through her unwavering commitment to art, artists, creative expression, and new ideas, she changed a city and she made Boston contemporary. Read the WBUR story → https://loom.ly/q8k8HwM

Did you know that the ICA, founded in 1936, was one of the first contemporary art museums in North America? Right now, we are undertaking a huge project processing our archive, which includes documents, posters, catalogues, artwork, recordings, photography, correspondence, and more spanning almost 90 years! These materials hold important stories about art, culture, politics, and power in the twentieth century through today, and we're working through reviewing, organizing, describing, inventorying, and increasing accessibility to them. We're so happy to be part of Boston's arts community, and we loved hosting local Tessitura users here last week. Thank you, Andrew Recinos, for visiting!
Boston is a town that loves its #artsandculture: It was a wonderful week visiting Tessitura members all over town. 🎶 💃 🎭 🖼️ Do they have challenges right now? Absolutely. But we also heard stories of bold new building projects, innovative programming, growing education programs, and above all: Grit. That’s the thing about Boston. No matter what the world throws at them, they forge ahead and get to work. ♥️ Extra thanks to my two co-pilots, Tessitura VP of Product Debra Weissman and Senior Director of Support, Chris Willmeth.
