INSIDE GNSS covers the global navigation satellite systems: GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou and related technologies.
About us
Inside GNSS is an international business-to-business magazine that covers GPS and other space-based positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) technology. It is written for engineers, designers, manufacturers and policy-makers of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). Subscriptions are free for those who work in the field. Editorial content is heavily weighted towards issues of the four major GNSS operators: the United States (GPS), Russia (GLONASS), China (BeiDou) and the European Union (Galileo). Regional and augmentation systems such as those developed by the United States (WAAS, SBAS), Japan (QZSS) and Europe (EGNOS) as well as eLoran, the terrestrial radionavigation system, are also covered. As satellite navigation systems have developed, Inside GNSS has covered the integration of GNSS with other PNT technologies to improve user equipment in locations where satellite signals are hard to obtain, the implications for manufacturers and policy-makers as more satellite signals and new systems become available, and the political and legal issues that arise as location-based technology becomes more precise.

As the 5th Annual Assured PNT Summit convenes this April in Washington, D.C., national leaders across defense, industry, and academia will gather to address what Dana Goward, the Summit’s long-time moderator, calls “our greatest concern”—the fragility of PNT in the U.S. homeland. A seasoned advocate for robust, layered PNT solutions, Goward sees the Summit as a critical venue to spark the action that has long lagged behind growing awareness of risk. “We’ve got everything we need,” he says. “Except for action.” This year’s Summit, hosted by the Defense Strategies Institute, brings together top minds and decision-makers in a closed-door, town hall-style forum. The United States Space Force is concerned about the resiliency of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and has moved out on a plan to address it, although it’s unclear if the money will be there in the coming years to achieve all the service’s goals. The service, created in 2019 during the first Trump Administration, is worried that existing GPS satellites are too prone to interference and jamming. It has proposed Resilient GPS, or R-GPS, an additional network of smaller, cheaper navigation satellites to augment the existing network of 31 GPS satellites. This addition to the network is estimated to cost $1 billion over the next five years for up to 20 small satellites. So far, some lawmakers in Congress have not been convinced that more GPS satellites are the answer. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eyqm6wg9

Nearly 20 years ago, an Inside GNSS article looked at C-band's potential as a future for GNSS signals. Today, TrustPoint plans to make it part of a commercial dual-use LEO PNT system and C-band service. In this article, the authors summarize the cost and benefit trades of C-band versus L-band at LEO versus medium Earth Orbit (MEO), inclusive of considerations for space segment design, architecture, and size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C); signal and service design; and attenuation effects and path delay. Although highly advanced and technologically sophisticated, GNSS is extremely vulnerable to deliberate jamming, accidental interference, space weather events, and system malfunctions. While fiber networks can (and are) being deployed for metrology grade time distribution, they are expensive to establish and run and need high-level expertise for calibration. Locata Corporation's radio based ranging and enhanced time synchronization algorithms provide a resilient solution that complements GNSS and offers fiber-levels of performance without requiring the fiber. In this article, the authors detail the technology and recent testing. https://lnkd.in/eDnjdrer Nunzio Gambale Ian Sainsbery Clayton Gumbrell Mustafa Ozgur Kanli Joel Barnes Michael Skeen #gnss #pnt
