🚨 The U.S. is the world’s largest net importer of aluminum. 🚨 With 82% of its primary aluminum coming from abroad, rising demand will put even more strain on supply chains. 📦 Global shifts, trade policies, and market competition could further tighten access. The new Industrious Labs report explores what this means for key industries and investment in domestic production. Decarbonizing industry via research & analysis, focused campaigns, networking & capacity building, sharp communications.
About us
Our mission is to decarbonize heavy industry by 2045: cleaning up the processes we use to make steel, aluminum and other materials and advancing a circular economy. Today, industrial emissions 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it the largest source of emissions. And, while other sectors like transportation and buildings are falling, emissions in the industrial sector are stuck. We partner with foundations and advocates to develop campaign strategies, support the execution of campaigns, and stand up diverse coalitions to tackle industrial sectors including steel, aluminum, waste and advancing a circular economy.

❗ ❗ ICYMI: On Friday, the DOE announced it aimed to close the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations and terminate nearly half its awarded funding, according to Axios. This is on the heels of a slew of major federal cuts to low-carbon construction materials, including cement and concrete. The Trump administration created a “hit list of clean energy projects” that would essentially erase billions of dollars in funding to critical programs, including the C-MORE program and the Industrial Demonstrations Program. What an absolute reckless tragedy. Cutting important programs like this are direct hits to American competitiveness and innovation, not to mention massively impactful to job markets. Plus, IDP was a public-private partnership, generating billions in private investment. Axing that is downright backwards. Most importantly, what DOGE is doing is illegal. According to Andrew Beebe at Obvious Ventures, “This is a time when America should be putting its best foot forward to be competitive, and instead we’re shooting ourself in the foot,” he told Latitude Media. “And it’s counterintuitive to the administration’s stated goals. Supposed actions like this make me think that not everybody is as committed to competitiveness.” What a whirlwind of a few weeks (months). And I haven’t even mentioned anything about where IDP projects are, who they benefit, and the impact of tariffs on cement (read: construction costs). Stay tuned…. ------ Axios: https://lnkd.in/dd6bCdnX Latitude Media: https://lnkd.in/dAfnQmd3

"A 2024 analysis by Industrious Labs projected that if every state were to adopt these best practices, it could lead to a 56% drop in landfill methane emissions by 2050. Experts hope that as these climate leaders adopt stricter rules, more states will step up. In 2010, California showed that this ripple effect is possible, Katherine B. said. 'The great news about this is, the solutions are known. The technology is sitting on the shelf.'" https://lnkd.in/gJjaAsdd

For years, residents of Val Verde, California have been sounding the alarm on the noxious pollution being spewed from the Chiquita Canyon Landfill. Last week, a group of impacted community members traveled to Sacramento, where they called on the California Air Resources Board to update the state's 15-year-old landfill regulations and keep communities like theirs safe from harmful emissions. 💡 Tariffs alone won’t revive the U.S. primary aluminum industry. 📰 In a new op-ed, Aluminum Campaign Director Annie Sartor breaks down the latest aluminum import tariffs and reveals the real challenge facing the industry: electricity costs. "Aluminum is an important resource that is high in demand in the United States. However, if we really want to turn around the aluminum industry, we need to look at the largest source of its costs: its energy source." The op-ed also examines how the domestic primary aluminum industry has fared since the 2018 Section 232 tariffs: "In 2018, the U.S. had seven primary aluminum smelters. Since then, three have closed or curtailed operations — Alcoa’s Intalco smelter in Washington in 2020, Century’s Hawesville facility in Kentucky in 2022 and Magnitude 7 Metals facility in Missouri in 2024. Today, only four remain, located in Kentucky, Indiana, South Carolina, and New York." ➡️ Read more about the path forward for U.S. aluminum in IndustryWeek: https://lnkd.in/g9DpNdwv
