Welcoming refugees and serving immigrants since 1918
About us
Mission The International Institute of New England (IINE) creates opportunities for refugees and immigrants to succeed through resettlement, education, career advancement and pathways to citizenship. History and Context Founded in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1918, IINE is one of the region’s largest and oldest service providers for new Americans. The International Institute serves 2,000 refugees and immigrants each year and has launched new programs to double the number of newcomers served to 4,000 within five years. In the past year, staff in our Boston, Lowell, and Manchester (NH) field offices provided resettlement, family reunification, education, career assistance, and legal services to people from 67 different countries. As the United States engages in a pitched debate about immigration policy, our work is critical to preserving the nation’s tradition of welcoming people of all backgrounds who cherish freedom, equality and hard work. IINE’s programs are particularly important to New England, which has a notable dependence on immigrant labor to grow its economy.

Honoring our legacy 🗽🇺🇸 In a recent blog, IINE Board of Directors Member Tuan Ha-Ngoc reflected on how the bravery and compassion of the founders of our Boston office—in the face of wide-spread anti-immigrant sentiment—provides us with an important guide for navigating the challenges of today. Our founders knew that welcoming and supporting immigrants was the right, humane, and smart thing to do, and we are proud to carry on this legacy. “You come to the United States as a refugee and you can work right away. Within a year you can get a green card, and they are now going to try to make that process a lot longer and more difficult, and that’s unnecessary because these people have been vetted, extremely vetted overseas before they came to the United States. So what people are living in right now is pure fear,” IINE President and CEO Jeff Thielman told WBUR as refugees in our communities face a new level of uncertainty under the new presidential administration. The uncertainty is only made worse by significant cuts to federal funding for refugee and immigrant organizations like IINE. Listen here to learn more about the current state of U.S. refugee resettlement: https://hubs.li/Q03hV4Hp0 Before the administration closed its doors to refugees, IINE resettled hundreds of refugees who still need support as they learn English, finds jobs, and rebuild their lives in a new country. Please consider donating today to support refugees, who have already endured so much and deserve a chance at safety: https://hubs.li/Q03hV6_d0

Continue our legacy of welcome 🗽🇺🇸 Bashir knows the feeling of having the door to safety and opportunity shut on him. His hopes for a better life were dashed when the first Trump administration banned refugees from Muslim-majority countries from resettling in the U.S. However, he did not give up. During the 15 years he spent in a refugee camp, Bashir dedicated his life to helping others - from supporting people with disabilities to working to prevent violence, and teaching fellow refugees to read and write. Bashir finally got his chance at the American dream in 2023. Since arriving in Boston, he has felt nothing but gratitude for his new community and neighbors, whose kindness has helped eased his transition. Today, Bashir works as a building concierge and an interpreter at schools and hospitals, as he trains to become a software developer. He feels at home in his neighborhood, where he attends a local mosque and plays soccer with his friends. Join us in continuing our nation’s legacy of welcome by supporting refugees like Bashir today: https://lnkd.in/ebYxs8Fr #immigrantswelcome #refugeeswelcome #givetoday #welcomingcommunities #refugeeresettlement #refugeehope

International Institute of New England reposted this
On January 20, the U.S. suspended all refugee admissions under the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP). The program has resettled over 3 million refugees since its creation by the 1980 Refugee Act. The ban has stranded hundreds of thousands of refugees and separated families—disrupting a decades-old system built to offer protection and hope. Since then, legal challenges have been filed by refugees, U.S.-based refugee sponsors, and NGOs. Swipe to learn more about the key court cases and where things stand. “When I think of the people we serve, it's a man from Haiti who came here and we got him a job and he’s a warehouse assistant and he just got an award for amazing work and his goal in life is to get his master's degree in chain management. That’s the person we want to kick out of the country? Someone who will help us with supply chain management?” IINE SVP and Chief Advancement Office Alexandra Weber, MSW, LICSW told Boston Public Radio hosts Jim Braude & Margery Eagan on GBH, as the Trump administration works to reduce legal pathways to immigration.
