Did You Know? 💡 When budgeting for personnel on SBIRs and STTRs, “... companies can charge reasonable rates defined as 'what a prudent person in the conduct of competitive business would be willing to pay.'” What an insightful deep dive into one of the most overlooked keys to federal funding success: compliance and financial management! We’re incredibly grateful to have hosted the renowned Michael Tentnowski, whose expertise and practical advice gave attendees a clearer path to success in securing and managing SBIR/STTR grants. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this event a success! #SBIR #STTR #IGNITEFSU #GrantManagement #SmallBusiness #Entrepreneurship #FundingSuccess #StartupSupport

An unforgettable day of learning, insight, and connection at the TiE Masterclass: Startup Strategies for Success. We were proud to host this event at the Florida State University - Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship and partner with TIE Tampa Bay to support Florida’s growing innovation ecosystem. A special thank you to MidSouth Bank for your generous support in making this event possible. #IgniteFSU #TiEMasterclass #Entrepreneurship #FSU #TiETampaBay
Entrepreneurship is never a straight line — and listening to Chitra K., and Claudiu Bucur sharing how they’ve navigated their own storms — was a masterclass in resilience. From pivots to mindset shifts, their stories reminded us that entrepreneurship isn’t about having all the answers, but about building the courage to keep going. Eric Liguori was another powerful addition to the conversation — sharing how moments like COVID pushed entrepreneurs to manage uncertainty head-on, turning risk into opportunity with thoughtful leadership. As TIE Tampa Bay expands its reach beyond Tampa, it was special to be part of this moment in Tallahassee — connecting with founders, students, and the community leaders across Florida. We also had the chance to visit the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship — what a place. The story of Jim Moran starting with soda pop sales at age seven and eventually becoming the only car dealer featured on the cover of TIME in 1961? That kind of grit and vision is what keeps this journey exciting. Big thanks to IGNITE FSU, Valerie Landrio McDevitt, and Alissa Costabile, MBA, for pulling everything together — and to MidSouth Bank for your generous support. Truly grateful for the stories, the learning, and the reminder that we’re all in this together. Last week, I had the opportunity to visit Lehigh University, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University & Florida State University to speak about the NSF funded work (Grant # TIP-2430589) around innovation & entrepreneurship by university faculty known as PTIE (Promotion & Tenure - Innovation & Entrepreneurship). Thank you to all my wonderful hosts and to all the amazing faculty, staff, administrators and students that I had the opportunity to speak with during my visits. You can read more about my visit to FSU in the article with this post. I look forward to visiting Montana State University-Bozeman & University of Nevada-Las Vegas later this month to speak about the same topics. Universities do amazing work each and every day to make our world a better place - both through the students they help to train and mentor to be the next generation of innovators, entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs that drive our innovation economy and the faculty that seek societal impacts beyond the traditional publication and grant paradigm. Thank you to Erwin Gianchandani & Pradeep Fulay in the TIP Directorate at NSF for their support over the years and to all our amazing partners in the PTIE coalition and beyond for helping to create what Almesha L. Campbell, Ph.D., RTTP, HonNAI has called "a movement" to expand the breadth of impact from our universities. None of this would have been possible without the visionary leadership at Oregon State University. Brian Wall, Karl Mundorff, Jana Bouwma-Gearhart, Julie Risien, Irem Y. Tumer, Tuba Ozkan-Haller, Edward Feser, Jayathi Murthy and so many other folks at OSU made this possible. #GoBeavs

#FSUResearch is building better polymers! Work from Justin Kennemur of the Florida State University - College of Arts and Sciences and Hoyong Chung of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering COE is helping to push the limits of materials science. #FSUImpact
My friend Hoyong Chung and I both started at Florida State University in 2014. Today we reflected on our successful patents over the last 4 years at the IGNITE FSU Commercialization Celebration. We are both developing new polymers to address societal challenges. Let's go!

🎉 Proud to recognize the amazing, highly impactful applied work done by FSU researchers! #IGNITE #InnovationIsEverywhere
Florida State University research is all about impact. In the past fiscal year, FSU faculty filed patents for inventions that will help fight dengue virus, improve the materials in solar cells, build better heat exchangers and much more. The university recently recognized faculty innovators who will form the inaugural cohort of IGNITE FSU Ambassadors, sharing the entrepreneurship happening at FSU and how it is helping Florida and the USA. FSU also welcomed Oregon State University Professor Rich G. Carter, who shared the work he is leading as part of Promotion & Tenure – Innovation & Entrepreneurship, a National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported initiative to facilitate the work universities are doing in the entrepreneurship space and encourage them to incorporate entrepreneurship and innovation into the promotion and tenure process. IGNITE FSU is part of the National Science Foundation’s Accelerating Research Translation program. This transformational initiative that will serve as a connector and catalyst for the translation of products and services out of the research community in Tallahassee and ensure maximal impact on the Florida economy and beyond. #FSUResearch | #FSUImpact

Thank you to Oregon State University Professor Rich G. Carter for sharing your insight on Promotion & Tenure – Innovation & Entrepreneurship at Florida State University! “Dr. Rich Carter is a true partner,” said Vice President for Research Stacey Patterson. “He is a national leader in the conversation around innovation and entrepreneurship.” Carter is the principal investigator of a National Science Foundation (NSF) program to facilitate the work universities are doing in the entrepreneurship space and encourage them to incorporate entrepreneurship and innovation into the promotion and tenure process. Many faculty members get into research wanting to have a positive impact on society through their work. Creating new products or companies is one way to do that. “Remember these impacts are all across your colleges, all across the university,” Carter said.
