She realized she had a passion for hospitality and customer service. As a woman who has worked full time and raised 3 beautiful children that have now become amazing adults, it is not an easy task, and I admire all the working mom's out there doing it every day. • As we kick off Women’s History Month, Hyde Park Hospitality (HPH) is proud to celebrate the incredible women who make up our diverse team—60% of whom are in leadership roles. Throughout the month, we’ll be highlighting the talented women driving HPH’s success and shaping our future. Today, we’re spotlighting Melanie Langan, General Manager at The Club Pittsburgh, the lounge at the Pittsburgh International Airport. She joined HPH in 2021 and oversees the airport lounge with HPH’s partner – Airport Dimensions. How did you get into hospitality / airport lounge field? I first started in hospitality as a young woman in college working as a server. I tried my hand at different career paths after school and took a 10-year hiatus to raise my children. I jumped back into the hospitality field as a restaurant co-owner and then later a food and beverage manager and events coordinator at a country club before trying my hand at airport lounges with Hyde Park Hospitality. What’s it like being a woman working in the airport lounge industry? Like many women I have had to wear many hats, daughter, wife, mother, friend. Each title requires its own set of skills to be successful. I feel society can put many parameters on what it means to be a woman. Navigating these parameters can be frustrating and binding at times. Maturity, life lessons, and experience have changed me into the confident woman I am today. This airport lounge field can be a challenging one with long hours, demanding guests from all over the world. Any leader in this industry must have inner strength and drive. I believe this is even more true for women in this industry. To be taken seriously, a woman must be firm but fair. Being thick skinned is a must, and she must be willing to lead with precision and grace. Working with Hyde Park Hospitality has given me the opportunity to grow as a leader and travel for business to widen my knowledge and understanding of the airport lounge model of hospitality.
