Our #HawthorneLaneWoman of the month is Katie Ledecky—an Olympic swimmer, philanthropist, and author. Born and raised in Bethesda, Maryland, Ledecky began swimming at the age of six. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, with a minor in political science from Stanford University. Ledecky made her Olympic debut at the 2012 London Games and has since become one of the most decorated swimmers in the sport's history. Outside of swimming, Ledecky is involved in various charity organizations, including Bikes for the World, Shepherd’s Table, Catholic Charities, and the Wounded Warrior Project. In 2022, Ledecky partnered with Panasonic and Discovery Education to launch the STEM Forward Program, an educational initiative that provides digital resources for students and educators , showcasing how technology can improve lives. Following her graduation from Stanford University, Ledecky became passionate about empowering women and girls in STEM, telling Sports Business Journal, “Education has always been a big priority in my life, and it’s always been important to me to communicate that with young students.” Most recently, she released a memoir titled Just Add Water in late spring 2024, detailing her journey to becoming one of the most accomplished swimmers in the world. Katie is a powerful role model for women of all ages, encouraging them to pursue their dreams with practice, persistence, and poise. Her dedication to her craft, resilience in the face of challenges, and commitment to excellence serve as a reminder that success—whether in athletics, business, or any career—comes from hard work, confidence, and continuous growth. Accountability is a part of many aspects of life, especially in the workplace. This Harvard Business Review article, "3 Ways to Compassionately Hold Your Team Accountable" by David Rock, Emma Sarro, and Chris Weller breaks down accountability specifically across leadership. One method of holding teams accountable leans into taking ownership, showing commitment to a project, setting expectations, and creating opportunities for learning and growth. "Leaders should strive for the second type of accountability, as there is now significant research suggesting that encouraging a growth mindset accelerates individual performance, learning and adaptability, and overall well-being. And because growth-oriented accountability rewards employees for taking risks and encourages a growth mindset, it has knock-on benefits for team culture. In particular, it compels people to find solutions to the mistakes others have made rather than blaming or shaming them."
