Meet Matthew Boino—a clinician at the Hartford, CT and Worcester, MA Hanger Clinic locations and an unstoppable force of determination and resilience! At just one year old, Matt had both of his legs amputated below the knee due to chicken pox and other infections that eventually led to sepsis. Now at 33, he spends every day helping others with limb loss and limb difference while working hard to meet his own mobility goals. From hitting the gym to hiking, biking, and spending time with his family, Matt is always on the move—and now, he’s embracing running. Matt shared his gratitude for the support of his clinician, Nellie Zarif at the Worcester, MA #HangerClinic, for all she does to motivate him to keep pushing himself both personally and professionally. As he says, "It's never too late to become more active and to find people who give you a boost on your journey." On April 27, Matt will run the #Bionic5K in Cambridge, MA, and his next goals are to complete a #Disney5K with his siblings and a 10K race alongside Nellie. Thank you to Matt and Nellie for all the ways they help empower others while embracing new challenges! #EmpoweredCareers #LLLDAM

Tomas Chadwick is a 54-year-old father of four from Darien, CT who was born without his right leg due to a rare birth defect. He underwent several surgeries before receiving his first prosthesis from #HangerClinic in 1972 — meaning he’s been a patient for more than five decades! Over the years, Tomas has worked with clinician Dan Ruiz at the White Plains, NY location to help him achieve his career and activity goals, including his job as a volunteer firefighter with the Town Of Darien, along with kayaking, biking, skiing and golfing with his wife (who he’s celebrating his 29th wedding anniversary with this June!). Tomas’s favorite quote is "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.” — a sentiment that has helped him tackle new challenges with confidence. We’re incredibly grateful to have worked with Tomas over the years. Thank you to Dan and all who have helped Tomas in his journey! #EmpoweredCareers #LLLDAM

April is Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month (LLLDAM), a time to celebrate resilience, share experiences, and raise awareness for the 5.6 million people across the U.S. who have limb loss or limb difference. Jason Wening, MS, CPO, FAAOP, clinic manager of the Lincoln Park #HangerClinic in Chicago, IL, brings a unique perspective to the #OandP field. Born without feet and part of his left hand, he has been using two prosthetic devices for most of his life. He stresses the importance of creating real connections with others who have experienced limb loss or limb difference. "I grew up in a time when I didn’t meet other people who had a prosthesis," Jason shared. "My parents tried, but the resources didn’t exist to connect people like we can now. When I was younger, I wished I could have met someone further down the path that I was on. When I was able to find that, it was a life-changing experience and connection." "At a camp [for those with limb loss/limb difference], in that reality, in those moments, it was the first time I saw people with disabilities being upbeat and celebrating life as they challenged themselves with new activities. Really any activity where you connect with others experiencing a journey similar to yours is beneficial." Thanks to Jason and all those who are making this month so meaningful for the limb loss and limb difference community! Earlier this month, our Philadelphia #HangerClinic team joined the Community College of Philadelphia (CCP) to host an interactive cooking class geared towards individuals with upper limb loss and limb difference. Using adaptive equipment and specialized instruction, participants learned new skills and gained confidence in their cooking abilities as they prepared a delicious three-course meal for all to enjoy! Our gratitude goes out to Hanger Clinic's Amy Todd, Joe Kersch, Matthew Johnson, MPT, CEEAA, and residents Jordan Gaffney and Chesca Basilio, along with CCP Chef Andy Marin and his culinary program students who facilitated the evening. Special thanks to Bari Diamond from Point Designs for generously providing gifts for attendees to make the evening extra special. #OandP #EmpoweredCareers
