When Kat, a nurse manager at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, finished her shift, she decided to take the scenic route. Fate had intervened. Walking down Perricone Hallway, Kat noticed a woman slightly hunched over and leaning on another woman. She paused to ask if they were okay, and was told the woman's water had just broken. Kat dropped her belongings and sprang into action. She reassured the woman and called Leslie, a nursing supervisor, for backup while searching for a wheelchair. Spotting husband and wife Marco, a trauma tech, and Stella, a patient care technician, Kat enlisted their help. "They didn’t hesitate for a second," Kat says, describing how they rushed to the woman's side as she retrieved a wheelchair and hurried after them. Leslie arrived just as the situation escalated. Declining the wheelchair, the woman announced the imminent arrival of her baby and began to squat. With no time to spare, Kat and Leslie gently lowered her to the floor. Marco, who remarkably had gloves in his pocket, was directed to prepare for an impromptu delivery. "Marco, you are catching this baby," Leslie declared while she and Kat began to coach the mother. In a surreal yet beautiful moment, described by those present as time standing still, Marco delivered the baby. “From chatting with my wife in the Atrium to delivering a baby – it all happened so fast," Marco says, stating he was left smiling from ear to ear, overwhelmed with emotion. His first-ever experience with a birth only two weeks earlier felt like a strange sort of preparation. Drawn by the commotion, Ryan, a nursing supervisor, immediately alerted the labor and delivery and pediatrics teams. They arrived within moments and confirmed the wonderful news: We had a healthy mother and newborn. Kat, Leslie, Marco, Ryan and Stella carefully transferred them onto a stretcher for transport to the postpartum unit. As the adrenaline subsided, the team shared a moment of disbelief and profound relief. “It was incredibly hectic and uncertain,” Leslie says, “but we worked together seamlessly, prioritizing the safety of each other and our patients. I was so thankful to have such an amazing team.” Their quick thinking, expert coordination and profound compassion transformed a potential emergency into a heartwarming testament to teamwork and exceptional care. The mother has since expressed her sincere gratitude to the team who had ensured her baby's safe arrival. Kat says, “Sometimes we take a different route home, and we don’t know why. I believe this was my reason. I was supposed to take the scenic route that day.”

Hackensack Meridian Health and the Stevens Institute of Technology have collaborated on research and innovation since 2012. This collaboration has led to discoveries that perfectly match HMH’s health-care experience with Stevens’ engineering expertise closely related to healthcare. Both institutions are looking to foster, and expand, further breakthroughs into the future. The two institutions held a research webinar on February 27 to reconnect experts and open the doors to further collaboration projects. Selected Stevens experts presented their specialities and capacities. Much interest and enthusiasm greeted the potential for the two sides to expand their collaborative work together in four “clusters”: Bioinformatics; Rehabilitation Engineering and Medical Robotics; Medical Imaging and Signal Processing; and Chronic Care Delivery Systems. Earlier today, I had the privilege of joining Heidi Sommer in conversation at my fourth POLITICO Live Health Care Summit to discuss one of the most urgent topics in our industry: workforce shortage and burnout. Without a solution, this issue would be felt across health care, from fatigue for our team members to wait times for our patients. At Hackensack Meridian Health, it's one we're facing head on. Our RN vacancy rate is now just 5% — half of the national average. Through Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, our three nursing schools, our strategic partnership with Apollo Hospitals and our robust tuition reimbursement and education programs, we are proud to be supporting this generation of team members and those to follow in the future. And by embracing new technologies, creating a positive culture and removing unnecessary barriers, we build an environment in which patients and team members alike can thrive. #healthcare #burnout #workforce
