  • Let’s talk about something that matters to all of us: having a safe, stable place to call home. The Fair Housing Act, passed in 1968, was a major step forward in making that possible. It protects people from being discriminated against when they’re renting, buying, or getting a loan for a home. This protection applies regardless of race, religion, gender, disability, family status, or national origin. The law was signed just days after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination and became a powerful response to generations of unfair housing practices. While we’ve made important progress, there is still work to do to ensure everyone has a fair shot at homeownership and housing security. At Habitat for Humanity of Michigan, we believe fair housing is about more than policy—it’s about people. Everyone deserves the chance to build a future in a home where they feel safe, valued, and included. That’s the vision we’re working toward every day.

  • Clogged gutters can cause serious problems like water damage, roof leaks, and even issues with your home’s foundation. To avoid these costly repairs, make it a habit to check and clean your gutters at least twice a year, especially during the spring and fall. Clear out leaves and debris, look for any cracks or sagging sections, and make sure your downspouts are directing water away from your home. A little maintenance now can help keep your home safe, dry, and in great condition for years to come.
