GrowNYC, a 501(c)3, serves 3 million New Yorkers each year, providing opportunities to make NYC truly livable.

About us

GrowNYC is a hands-on non-profit with a mission to empower all New Yorkers with equitable access to fresh, locally grown food and neighborhood green spaces, reduce waste, and care for the environment. GrowNYC was originally created in 1970 as the Council on the Environment of New York City (CENYC). Born out of the spirit of the first Earth Day, CENYC was initially a policy-based organization, writing comprehensive reports about quality of life issues like air quality, traffic, and noise. Today, we serve over 3 million New Yorkers annually through a robust network of sustainability programs and resources. Our programs focus our efforts on four key areas: Food Access & Agriculture, Green Spaces, Zero Waste and Education. Since 1970, GrowNYC has been rolling up its sleeves alongside NYC residents to: - Provide access to healthy, fresh, local food for all New Yorkers -Grow and maintain vibrant green spaces and community gardens. -Help New Yorkers recycle more and reduce waste. -Create the next generation of environmental leaders through hands-on education programs.

  • 🚨 The current administration’s proposed cuts to state and federal grants threaten the very foundation of the work we do at GrowNYC, focusing on environmental sustainability and equity-driven initiatives. Deep cuts to vital programs like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) are putting food access and farming at risk. The cuts threaten the future of all GrowNYC Farmstands and nearly one-third of our Greenmarkets. Our markets and nutrition incentive programs are lifelines to not just the NYC families using them, but the farmers they are purchasing from. If these programs are gutted, millions will lose access to local food, and local farmers will lose critical income, placing the entire regional food system at risk. This isn’t just a funding issue—it’s about the long-term survival of our food system, local farmers, and the well-being of our communities. We need your support now more than ever. Here’s how you can help: 📢 Spread the word: Share this message with your friends and networks. 📲 Call your elected officials: Your voice matters! 💚 Take care of yourself: We’re in this together, supporting each other through these challenges. 🤝 Donate today: We urge you to donate to GrowNYC. Your generosity will help us bridge this funding gap and continue supporting farmers, food-insecure communities, and all the services we provide. Visit https://lnkd.in/eUy9CV5 to support GrowNYC.

  • 🚨Urgent: We Need Your Support Now GrowNYC is facing an urgent funding crisis that threatens the stability of the regional food system and the communities we serve. Most nonprofits, like most Americans, live paycheck to paycheck—and GrowNYC is no exception. The federal government’s ongoing policies and funding decisions are undermining GrowNYC’s ability to: - Maintain essential food access programs, including our Greenmarkets and Farmstands, - Process millions of dollars in essential nutrition benefits at our sites, such as SNAP and the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), - Distribute free and low-cost fresh food through our Wholesale Food Hub to over 300 community partners. - Support small & mid-sized farms through our Farmer Assistance Program. - Provide free nutrition & environmental education to students, NYCHA residents, and older adults. Right now, small farms and NYC communities are facing crisis. Federal funding cuts threaten the programs that farmers and communities rely on—programs that help keep food on all our tables. GrowNYC has always been resilient because of the people who power it — supporters like you. 82 cents of every dollar goes directly to programming, so you can feel confident your donation makes a real difference. 💚 Stand with us today. Visit https://lnkd.in/eUy9CV5 to support GrowNYC. We need your support now more than ever.

  • While many know about the CSA model today, few realize that its roots go back much further than the 1980s. Long before the modern-day subscription box, Booker T. Whatley, a forward-thinking agricultural professor at Tuskegee University, was pioneering the idea of direct connections between farmers and their communities. Dr. Whatley saw firsthand the challenges Black farmers faced due to land theft and racist policies. To fight back, he created the "clientele membership club" and "Pick Your Own" market systems, allowing communities to support their local farms by paying upfront for fresh produce. This model gave farmers a predictable income and a chance to grow sustainably—fostering resilience for small farms in a rapidly industrializing food system. “The clientele membership club is the lifeblood of the whole setup. It enables the farmer to plan production, anticipate demand, and, of course, have a guaranteed market,” he said. His eco-friendly approach focused on helping Black family farms stay financially strong. He knew farmers could earn more by growing valuable crops and building direct relationships with local customers who wanted to visit and pick their own produce. Thank you, Dr. Whatley, for your invaluable contributions to the advancement and empowerment of small farms across the nation! #GrowBlackHistory #CSAWeek

  • This Black History Month, GrowNYC will proudly continue to honor and celebrate the profound history and contributions of the Black community throughout the entire month. Nature and eco-systems thrive on diversity, so does environmental and climate action! Diversity, equity, and inclusion is the legacy of the civil rights movement. The recent decision by the federal government to jeopardize millions in federal funding that sustains GrowNYC’s critical programs tied to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives and environmental sustainability—values that lie at the heart of GrowNYC’s mission. Recent events threaten to actively erode our progress. Together, we are committed to continue listening and working side by side with our colleagues to determine what comes next, and to develop an action plan to build, change, and grow to address long overdue corrections to unfair systems that too often and for too long have resulted in loss of income, opportunity, liberty, and life. Stay tuned as we spotlight partners, leaders, and movements that have paved the way toward groundbreaking influences in food and agriculture that touch all cultures of the world today. All are welcome to be part of this celebration! #Grow4Change #GrowBlackHistory #BlackHistoryMonth
