The Agile Manifesto isn’t just about software—it’s a mindset that applies to most aspects of our lives.
My husband and I are learning to sail. We’re total beginners, but one thing has become crystal clear: success on the water isn’t just about the tools—it’s about the people.
The lines, sails, and navigation equipment are important, but those tools don’t guarantee smooth sailing. What truly matters is how well we work together: clear communication, adapting to unexpected gusts (or the lack of wind), and learning to maneuver in sync. These moments make or break the experience.
A few weeks ago, we sailed from Hospital Point in Quantico, VA, to meet friends for lunch. The plan was simple: enjoy a day of sailing on the Potomac, followed by good food and great company. But Mother Nature had other ideas. With no wind, we switched to the motor—but soon, it sputtered and began to smoke. My husband’s deadpan observation: “That’s probably not good.”
At that moment, our carefully laid plans went out the window. My husband grabbed an oar while I stayed at the tiller. Together, we adjusted, improvised, and worked as a team. We reached the dock safely. Most importantly, had a great time.
This experience brought a core principle of the Agile Manifesto to life: “Individuals and interactions over processes and tools.”
On the water—just like in Agile—the focus is on collaboration and adaptability. It’s not about perfect conditions or following a rigid process; it’s about how the “crew” (even if it’s just two people) responds to challenges and works toward a shared goal. Tools and processes are there to support us, but it’s our interactions that ultimately determine success.
Sailing has taught me that it’s okay to be new, to make mistakes, and to keep learning. Every adjustment we make brings us closer to understanding not just the sport, but also each other.
What about you? Have you experienced the power of individuals and interactions in your work or hobbies? I’d love to hear your stories!
