I am still energized after attending the #RareBootcamp and so grateful to be surrounded by innovators and leaders who are working to create life-changing medicine. A huge thank you to Ultragenyx for putting together a program that was both transparent and transformative. The program offered open dialogue and delivered high level, complex information in a way that was digestible, especially for those just beginning their journey in this space. I am forever grateful for representing Global Liver Institute there and I’m excited to work with everyone to drive meaningful impact for patients and communities everywhere. We’re a little less rare when we work together!!
This week, we hosted the latest #RareBootcamp in Cambridge, MA — three days of immersive learning with passionate advocates and families impacted by rare disease. Through expert-led sessions and collaborative discussion, attendees gained guidance, resources, and connections to help drive their drug development efforts forward. Each Rare Bootcamp session reaffirms the urgency to accelerate therapies for rare and ultrarare diseases and leaves us inspired by the relentless commitment of the many individuals working to create a brighter future for rare disease families. Thank you to the generous sponsors and partners EveryLife Foundation for Rare Diseases, Global Genes, Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc., BridgeBio, GeneDx, Healx, iXCells Biotechnologies, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc., and Rentschler Biopharma for making this event possible.

Global Liver Institute, along with over 50 other organizations, stands with the #raredisease community in calling for Independence Blue Cross Blue Shield (IBX) to rescind a policy that denies care to people living with #rare, chronic, and disabling conditions by delaying patients’ access to drugs approved via the FDA’s accelerated approval pathway. The accelerated approval process ensures that patients with little or no treatment options – especially those with #rare diseases – have hope for future innovation and access. Drugs approved via the accelerated approval process can greatly improve quality of life and extend life expectancy, which is invaluable for patients with liver diseases. When a private corporation denies access to #FDA-approved treatments, it undermines Congress's intent to expedite access to these therapies for patients. GLI is committed to fighting for patients with #liverdisease to get access to the care they need. #liverhealth #liver #healthcare #liverdisease
Today, Little Hercules Foundation, joined by 57 patient advocacy organizations serving rare disease patients and their families, sent this letter to Independence Blue Cross Blue Shield (IBX) regarding their policy excluding coverage of all treatments approved via FDA's accelerated approval pathway. Thank you to our fellow rare disease advocates, including many DMD organizations, that joined our efforts to change this dangerous policy. Approved is approved.

In a historic medical breakthrough, Northwestern Medicine surgeons successfully split a deceased donor’s #liver to save two patients, including a man who had been told hospice was his only option. The innovative #transplant procedure, the first of its kind in the U.S., offers new hope for patients with advanced #liverdisease. Barclay Missen, 53, was diagnosed with stage 4 #colorectalcancer in 2021, with the disease confined to his #liver. His only chance for survival was a #livertransplant, but because he didn’t qualify for a standard #transplant, his options were limited. #Chemotherapy wasn’t working, and doctors were preparing him for end-of-life care. Then came a groundbreaking approach. Northwestern surgeons obtained consent from Kelli Podrez, the designated recipient of a deceased donor’s liver, to split the #organ. Doctors transplanted a small section of the donated liver alongside Missen’s remaining cancerous liver. Over the next two weeks, the transplanted section grew to sustain his body. In a second surgery, doctors removed the rest of his diseased liver, leaving him #cancer-free. Dr. Satish Nadig, a transplant surgeon at Northwestern Medicine, explained, "We took out half of his liver, leaving one half that still had cancer in it. We transplanted the small portion of the liver, waited two weeks for it to grow to a full size... then completed the oncologic operation by taking out the rest of the cancerous liver, rendering him cancer-free." Five months later, Missen has fully recovered. Podrez, who agreed to share her donor liver, never hesitated. "I thought it was kind of cool that they were saving two lives," she said. "There would be no question for me. It was going to save someone else’s life." Northwestern doctors believe this groundbreaking procedure could transform the future of liver transplants, expanding access to patients with stage 4 colorectal cancer and other severe liver diseases. https://lnkd.in/gNEFCSai #transplanttuesday #transplantation #organtransplant #liverhealth #liverdisease #livercancer #donatelife

As Dr. Masatoshi Kudo, MD, PhD, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at University of Kindai, shares, #Japan leads the world with the highest five-year #livercancer survival rate. This success is driven by collaboration between the Japan Society of Hepatology, #advocacy groups, and the government. Key to this achievement are early detection, widespread #hepatitis testing, and #healthinsurance coverage for #HCV and #HBV treatments. Public awareness and regular screenings also continue to play a crucial role in fighting liver #cancer. Drawing from a wealth of studies and the perspectives of community experts, GLI's "Global State of Liver Health" report defines and analyzes the landscape of #LiverHealth around the world. 🌍 To explore more of the report and learn about #liver disease's worldwide impacts, visit: https://lnkd.in/gg79cEbq 📖 #LiverHealthisPublicHealth #PublicHealth #LiverHealth #asia #policy #prevention

"I call it a brand, not a scar." Because of his #transplant, A3 alum Jeff Collins lives with purpose, gratitude, and grace—words that meant something entirely different before his second chance at life. His story is a reminder that the impact of #organdonation goes far beyond one life—it ripples out to families, communities, and future generations. This #DonateLifeMonth, honor the heroes we may never meet and consider the legacy one choice can leave behind. Know someone who inspires you to be kinder or live with more purpose?
