Artificial intelligence is reshaping the future of colorectal cancer screening, providing gastroenterologists with an invaluable second set of eyes during colonoscopies. As the gold standard for polyp detection, colonoscopies are critical in preventing colorectal cancer. AI-powered tools are enhancing sensitivity and accuracy, helping to close the gap in human error and improve patient outcomes. In a recent interview, J. Casey Chapman, MD, CMO of GI Alliance shares insights into how AI is advancing polyp detection and what the future holds for AI-assisted colonoscopy procedures. New research sheds light on the intersection of serotonin, gut-brain interactions, and SSRI treatment. Two recent studies examine how SSRIs—widely prescribed for depression and disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI)—may contribute to GI symptoms, including functional constipation in children exposed in utero. These findings reinforce the importance of a comprehensive approach when managing patients with both mood and GI disorders, particularly during pregnancy. Early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) is rising at an alarming rate, affecting younger adults who often present with more advanced and aggressive disease. As GI physicians, we must challenge the traditional assumptions about colorectal cancer risk and advocate for earlier screening strategies. Dr. Neil Parikh highlights key epidemiologic trends, risk factors—including microbiome dysbiosis and environmental exposures—and the critical role we play in prevention and early detection. With EOCRC cases doubling in younger generations, how can we better integrate risk-based screening protocols and improve early diagnosis? The conversation around probiotics and gut health is often driven by marketing rather than science. In a recent Washington Post op-ed, Dr. Trisha Pasricha challenges the multibillion-dollar probiotics industry, pointing out that the American Gastroenterological Association does not recommend probiotics for most digestive conditions due to a lack of strong clinical evidence. As gastroenterologists, it’s our responsibility to guide patients toward proven strategies rather than marketing hype. Are your patients asking about probiotics? How do you approach these conversations? #Gastroenterology #GutHealth #EvidenceBasedMedicine

We understand that many patients hesitate when it comes to scheduling a colonoscopy. However, the alternative is far more concerning. Colorectal cancer remains one of the deadliest cancers and often develops without symptoms until it reaches an advanced stage. Non-invasive stool and blood tests detect cancer but do not prevent it. A colonoscopy is the only screening method that allows for the detection and removal of precancerous polyps before they become cancerous. Screening should begin at age 45 for those at average risk and earlier for individuals with a family history or additional risk factors. A day of preparation is a small commitment compared to the lifelong benefit of prevention. https://bit.ly/4gUYEkx #ColonoscopySavesLives #ColorectalCancerAwareness #PreventCancer

Colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer in the U.S., yet men face a higher risk of both developing and dying from the disease. Research links this disparity to lower screening rates, often due to misconceptions about masculinity. In this article, Dr. Jonathan Rosenberg, Director of Clinical Research at GI Alliance of Illinois, examines the factors behind higher CRC rates in men, the importance of early detection, and the critical role of providers in patient education. While non-invasive tests are available, colonoscopy remains the gold standard, offering both detection and prevention. Gastroenterologists play a key role in closing this gap. By educating men about their risks and dispelling screening misconceptions, we can drive earlier diagnoses and better outcomes. When it comes to colorectal cancer screening, not all tests offer the same level of protection. Many patients assume a stool or blood test is enough, but the reality is different. Non-invasive tests can only detect cancer; they do not prevent it. Some tests miss 57% to 87% of cases where polyps or cancer are present. Colonoscopy is the only screening method that detects and removes precancerous polyps, actively reducing the risk of cancer development. As healthcare providers, we must guide patients toward the most effective screening options—especially those at higher risk. Early detection is important, but prevention saves lives. Early-onset colon cancer is on the rise, and research points to ultraprocessed foods as a contributing factor. These foods disrupt the gut microbiome, fuel chronic inflammation, and may increase colorectal cancer risk in younger adults. In a recent article, Dr. Neelima Reddy, a gastroenterologist with Gastroenterology Associates in Baton Rouge, part of GI Alliance, explores this critical issue. As healthcare providers, we must educate patients—especially those with GI symptoms or a family history—on how diet impacts colon health. Encouraging whole, nutrient-dense foods over ultra-processed options can be a vital step in prevention. Read more from Dr. Reddy: https://bit.ly/41uXmHc #ColonCancerAwareness #GutHealth
