During Stress Awareness Month, it’s worth reinforcing a message many of our patients haven’t heard enough: the gut feels stress as much as the mind does. Chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system affects digestive function through the enteric nervous system, often presenting as dyspepsia, IBS flares, or worsened GERD. As GI providers, we have a front-row seat to how stress manifests physically in the gut. We also know that medication alone isn’t always the answer. Helping patients understand the gut-brain connection opens the door to lifestyle interventions, CBT, and improved long-term outcomes. https://bit.ly/420kDBh #StressAwarenessMonth #GutBrainConnection #DigestiveHealth

New research sheds light on the intersection of serotonin, gut-brain interactions, and SSRI treatment. Two recent studies examine how SSRIs—widely prescribed for depression and disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI)—may contribute to GI symptoms, including functional constipation in children exposed in utero. These findings reinforce the importance of a comprehensive approach when managing patients with both mood and GI disorders, particularly during pregnancy. Explore the latest insights into SSRI exposure and its potential implications for clinical practice: https://bit.ly/3FxWkTE #Gastroenterology #GutBrainAxis #MentalHealth #GIResearch

Early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) is rising at an alarming rate, affecting younger adults who often present with more advanced and aggressive disease. As GI physicians, we must challenge the traditional assumptions about colorectal cancer risk and advocate for earlier screening strategies. Dr. Neil Parikh highlights key epidemiologic trends, risk factors—including microbiome dysbiosis and environmental exposures—and the critical role we play in prevention and early detection. With EOCRC cases doubling in younger generations, how can we better integrate risk-based screening protocols and improve early diagnosis? Read more about the growing EOCRC crisis and the role of GI physicians in shaping prevention efforts: https://bit.ly/41sooiy #ColorectalCancer #EOCRC #Gastroenterology #EarlyDetection

The conversation around probiotics and gut health is often driven by marketing rather than science. In a recent Washington Post op-ed, Dr. Trisha Pasricha challenges the multibillion-dollar probiotics industry, pointing out that the American Gastroenterological Association does not recommend probiotics for most digestive conditions due to a lack of strong clinical evidence. As gastroenterologists, it’s our responsibility to guide patients toward proven strategies rather than marketing hype. Are your patients asking about probiotics? How do you approach these conversations? #Gastroenterology #GutHealth #EvidenceBasedMedicine

We understand that many patients hesitate when it comes to scheduling a colonoscopy. However, the alternative is far more concerning. Colorectal cancer remains one of the deadliest cancers and often develops without symptoms until it reaches an advanced stage. Non-invasive stool and blood tests detect cancer but do not prevent it. A colonoscopy is the only screening method that allows for the detection and removal of precancerous polyps before they become cancerous. Screening should begin at age 45 for those at average risk and earlier for individuals with a family history or additional risk factors. A day of preparation is a small commitment compared to the lifelong benefit of prevention. https://bit.ly/4gUYEkx #ColonoscopySavesLives #ColorectalCancerAwareness #PreventCancer
