This month, as we celebrate GTA’s 40th anniversary, we reflect on our humble beginnings—our first office and first few projects. GTA’s journey began in August 1985, when our first President, John L. Wirth, P.E., opened the company’s doors at 141 North Main Street in Bel Air, Maryland. Our first testing lab was located in a garage in Bel Air. The first project, Job #8501, was a geotechnical report completed on August 15, 1985, for Cardinal Industries, which produced manufactured housing and also founded the Knights Inn motel chain. The project involved a subsurface exploration for a proposed Knights Inn in Harrisburg, PA, including 12 standard penetration test borings and laboratory testing, report of findings, and recommendations for construction of roadways and structure foundations. GTA must have made a good impression because, within our first two years, we worked for the company on 16 projects across Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Our second job (#8502) was for a Maryland’s Mass Transit Administration (MTA) claims hearing. Project #8503, completed on August 30, 1985, was a geotechnical report for a planned three-story office building at 139 North Main Street in Bel Air which became the new home of GTA. Fast forward to today—we’ve completed roughly 125,500 jobs since our start.
