🚨 AB 1279 PASSES PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE — A Victory for Youth Justice! We’re proud to share that AB 1279, co-sponsored by Fresh Lifelines for Youth (FLY), passed the California Assembly Public Safety Committee last night. This bill is a critical step toward justice reform in California. AB 1279 would end the use of juvenile strikes, a policy that allows decisions made in youth to follow individuals into adulthood, where they can result in severe, decades-long sentences and lifelong barriers. 💡 Why AB 1279 matters: – Removes a punitive barrier that disproportionately impacts youth of color – Creates more opportunities for rehabilitation, not retribution – Moves us closer to a justice system that sees young people as developing individuals—not lifelong offenders We are deeply grateful to CA Assemblymember Dr. Sharp-Collins for championing this effort and to all the partners and advocates moving this forward. Let’s keep going. Our youth—and our future—deserve nothing less. Congrats on this step forward to FLY's Policy Director Colin Ford and his amazing team of staff and youth who work tirelessly every day to advance justice! #AB1279 #YouthJustice #JusticeReform #Advocacy #BetheChange #California #LinkedInForGood

Love 💜 to see it! FLY youth are raising their voices to make positive change in their community! Thank you to Supervisor Susan Ellenberg for listening and recognizing the value of youth leadership! #youthleadership #santaclaracounty #community
Santa Clara County Supervisor for District 4, serving Burbank, Campbell, Santa Clara & West San Jose
I attended my first quarterly meeting with the Youth Voice Coalition at the Bill Wilson Center last Friday. It was an inspiring session, with youth from various organizations in attendance, including the Bill Wilson Center, Fresh Lifelines for Youth (FLY), Santa Clara Continuum of Care, Youth Liberation Movement, AACI (Asian Americans for Community Involvement), San Jose Conservation Corps, and Pacific Clinics. Bringing together community organizations and leaders to discuss topics that are dire to each and every one of us is an important part of finding solutions that truly work. We had a myriad of discussions, ranging from the County's response to the Federal Administration's service cuts to the current housing resources available to youth. A significant part of the meeting was also dedicated to letting youth speak for themselves, vocalizing concerns around the lack of services for justice-involved youth and the need for reliable sources of information. These conversations are crucial for creating the change our communities need, and it was inspiring to see so many voices come together with a shared goal of finding impactful solutions.

How is FLY Dismantling the School to Prison Pipeline? Elevating Youth Voices at the CA State Capitol! The FLY Policy Team joined fellow advocates at the Capitol for Fix School Discipline Advocacy Day, meeting with the Senate and Assembly to push for restorative justice in schools. FLY youth and staff shared firsthand why punitive measures like suspensions and expulsions fail students and emphasized the need for systemic change. In total, over a dozen organizations and 60 FSD members met with more than 30 state legislators to advocate for dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline and fostering inclusive and supportive school climates for all youth. #california #education #youthjustice #sacramento #nonprofit
