From Box to Bowl: A Growing Success in Duplin County 🥗 Since its official ribbon-cutting on July 29, 2024, the Box to Bowl smart farm initiative at James Sprunt Community College (JSCC) has been making a powerful impact in Duplin County—and Four County EMC is proud to be part of its continued success. Thanks to a grant from the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund and contributions from JSCC, North Carolina's Electric Cooperatives, Duplin County, and Four County EMC, this innovative hydroponic farm is more than just a container—it's a community-driven solution to food insecurity and scarcity. Recently, Four County EMC board members Carlton Raynor (East Duplin District) and Gene Jordan (West Pender District) received Crop & Cook Boxes—a symbol of the project’s growth and the local partnerships that make it possible. So, where does the food go? 🥕 USDA Farm Share Program 🍅 Local food drives and distribution centers 🍓 Duplin County schools, churches, senior services & youth programs 🥬 Community events, Future Farmers of America chapters, and more With bi-weekly distributions, the program continues to meet the needs of families, seniors, and youth—making fresh, nutrient-rich produce more accessible than ever before. "The addition of the Hydroponic Trailer at James Sprunt Community College is a vital step toward addressing food insecurity and food scarcity in Duplin County. By providing community members with the tools and knowledge to grow fresh, sustainable food, we are creating a ripple effect of positive change." — Katlyn R.
