This week I testified on Qatar's footprint in the American higher education system before the Texas House Committee on Homeland Security, Public Safety & Veterans' Affairs. Here's what you should know: 1. Qatar has approximately 11% of the world’s natural gas reserves but only some 330,000 citizens, so it has ample wealth to spend on buying prestige and influence. 2. According to federal disclosure data, American colleges and universities have accepted $6.25 billion from Qatar since 2001. However, Qatar’s total spending likely exceeds that figure. 3. Qatar is a major exporter of Islamist ideology, which it amplifies on the Qatar-owned Al Jazeera network. 4. By pumping money into the American higher education system and across the United States, Qatar avoids scrutiny as it advances hostile ideologies.
