“Build it and they will come.” The famous line from the movie Field of Dreams came to mind for Jennifer Unitis, Wake Tech Associate Director of Academic Technologies at Wake Technical Community College when the school became one of the first in North Carolina to establish an esports program to complement its Simulation and Game Development academic degree track. Wake Tech’s IT/AV staff repurposed existing AV systems in a divisible classroom to create an esports arena for their Eagles varsity team. Extron AV products were selected for the project. The strategy was to start small and build capability if the interest was there. The interest is definitely there, with a roster of about 20 players and 3 national championship victories since 2021. A second esports facility now operates on the Research Triangle Park campus. There, the community is invited to join student athletes, getting a taste of the fun and exciting world of esports.
