Yesterday, the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 reminded us that every step in the food supply chain matters—from farm to fork and beyond!   At EXCEL4MED, we see food waste not as an endpoint, but as a starting point for innovation. 💡🎯    In the Mediterranean, citrus peels, pomegranate seeds and other fruit by-products often go to waste. Started the day at a primary school... ... talking about orange peel! I like it when I'm not just involved in software and AI projects. And I like it even more when this gives me the opportunity to inspire our future generations. On Friday Dorian Galea (Mgarr Farms) and I had an unusual morning with the students at the Zejtun Primary School. We had the opportunity to share with them the work EXCEL4MED is doing in food waste valorisation. "Turning Trash Into Treasure" : this is the message we tried to convey. Nowadays, a lot of food waste such as citrus peel is just thrown away or fed to farm animals. Instead, it can be collected and transformed into valuable resources through green technologies. Research from EXCEL4MED is finding new environmentally friendly technologies that extract nutritious substances from waste. Six local partners: Malta Life Sciences Centre, Mgarr Farms, Malta Chamber, Koperativa Malta, Malta Food Agency, and the University Of Malta are all contributing to this project. The part I enjoyed most was when the students started asking questions. Their curiosity, and enthusiasm, was amazing. They, unlike many adults, get the concept of circular economy. They get what true sustainability means. We left the primary school with a big smile. We did our tiny bit to inspire our future generations to use science and innovation to create sustainable solutions. Thank you Zejtun Primary School. Inspiring the Next Generation: Excel4Med at Zejtun Primary B Johan Zammit and I had the incredible opportunity to visit Zejtun Primary B to introduce Year 6 pupils to the EXCEL4MED project, focusing on food waste valorization. It was inspiring to see their curiosity and enthusiasm as we discussed how discarded food can be transformed into valuable resources through green technologies instead of being wasted. Through interactive discussions and engaging activities, we explored how science and innovation can create a more sustainable future—one where waste becomes an opportunity rather than a problem. Seeing young minds light up with ideas reassured us that the next generation is ready to take on environmental challenges with fresh perspectives! A huge thank you to Zejtun Primary B for welcoming us and to the pupils for their eagerness to learn.
