Co-Founder & CEO @ Eudia | Partnering with CLOs to fix what's broken

Rob Beard isn’t just *thinking* about AI in legal.    He’s operationalizing it. At scale. It was a pleasure having Rob — Chief Legal Officer of Coherent (who previously held the same role at Mastercard and Micron) — join me on episode three of The Augmented Intelligence Podcast. Rob is rethinking the role of AI in law from first-principles, and this conversation didn’t disappoint. A few takeaways that stuck with me: – AI won’t replace lawyers. It will elevate them—like an Ironman suit for legal teams. – Most in-house teams aren’t inefficient—they’re forgetful. Knowledge is lost in inboxes and documents that no one can find. – CLM systems were built to tag. What we need now is the ability to query our legal history dynamically. – Repetition is no longer a defensible use of lawyer time. If it’s repeatable, it should be done by an agent. – The future isn’t automation for automation’s sake. It’s Augmented Intelligence as the foundation for faster, more strategic legal work. Rob’s thinking challenges the status quo—exactly what this next era demands. Will include the link to the full episode in the comments.

The future of legal AI is more Ironman than Terminator.    Here’s what I mean.    Last week I shared the Legal Week stage with Rob Beard at Coherent who absolutely nailed it:    You’re not being replaced by a machine—you’re stepping into the suit.    Imagine this: ⚡️ Negotiating with live access to every past deal  ⚡️ Never redlining the same clause twice  ⚡️ Legal workflows that learn and improve with every edit you make   This is the real future of in-house legal: Not cheaper. Not offshored. Not sidelined.   Empowered. Augmented. Superhuman.

Legal teams are moving faster than ever. But move in the wrong direction, and you’ll regret it. At Legalweek, I sat on a packed-room panel discussing the future of legal AI. The key takeaway? The biggest risk isn’t moving too slowly—it’s moving too fast in the *wrong* direction. We explored how top legal teams are already living in the future: ✅ Some are building fully augmented legal functions, where AI enhances, not replaces, human expertise.  ✅ Others predict law firms will be forced into subscription models as AI reshapes legal services.  ✅ The biggest shift of all? Legal teams must assume the future is here—and work backwards to build what’s missing. The urgency is real. General Counsels know AI is a game-changer. What they’re realizing now is that the *wrong* approach to AI is a major risk. After the panel, one legal executive told me: “This was the only session that actually made me think differently.”* Another said:  “We’ve been thinking about AI all wrong. We need to rethink our strategy before it’s too late.” Here’s the reality: ❌ Artificial Intelligence alone won’t cut it. AI that operates in a vacuum—without institutional knowledge, historical context, or human oversight—leads to compliance nightmares and bad legal decisions. ✅ Augmented Intelligence is the future. The smartest teams are leveraging AI to enhance their legal expertise, not replace it—giving them *control* over outcomes while dramatically increasing efficiency. I was honored to share the stage with industry leaders Rob Beard, James Sheppard, and Farrah Pepper—this is the conversation shaping the future of legal. At Eudia, we’re building the Augmented Intelligence category because we’ve seen firsthand: moving fast is critical, but moving in the wrong direction is even more dangerous. How is your legal team approaching AI—racing ahead, waiting cautiously, or rethinking your strategy? Drop a comment below—I’d love to hear your perspective. #Legalweek #AI #AugmentedIntelligence #FutureOfLegal #LegalTech

Legal tech has failed lawyers. The promise of the last wave of legal tech innovation was meant to revolutionize the industry. But it failed to live up to its potential. Here’s what went wrong: ❌ Lawyers didn’t adopt — tools weren’t built for how legal teams actually work. ❌ Software wasn’t fit for purpose — it focused on features, not workflows. ❌ Budgets never followed — less than 2% of legal spend goes to tech. The result? A fragmented, underutilized tech landscape that didn’t deliver. At Eudia, we believe the next wave of innovation needs to be different: ✅ Built for lawyers. ✅ Designed around real behavior. ✅ Powered by AI—but always with humans in control. We don’t need more legal tech. We need better legal transformation.

  • 🔊 New Podcast Episode: The Future of AI in Legal with Dr. Megan Ma. The legal industry is at a breaking point—and generative AI is accelerating the transformation faster than anyone expected. In our latest episode of The Augmented Intelligence Podcast, Dr. Megan Ma (CodeX, The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics) joins Omar Haroun to unpack the seismic shifts happening in legal due to AI, from partner-level AI personas to the reinvention of legal education and the evolution of the Chief Legal Officer. Key insights from this conversation: 🔹 AI isn’t just automating legal work—it’s capturing the nuanced behaviors of top lawyers. Dr. Ma explains how AI-powered legal agents are learning not just the law, but the strategic decision-making behind it. 🔹 Law firms are rethinking mentorship and training. With AI handling routine tasks, how will the next generation of lawyers develop expertise? 🔹 Are hallucinations overhyped?. AI reliability is a concern, but Dr. Ma argues that legal’s real challenge isn’t accuracy—it’s figuring out what lawyers actually offer in an AI-augmented world. 🔹 CLOs are stepping up. Legal isn’t a back-office function anymore—Chief Legal Officers are driving AI transformation at the highest levels of business. 🔹 The next decade: AI won’t replace lawyers—but lawyers without AI will struggle to compete. 🔥 This is a must-listen for legal professionals, CLOs, and anyone thinking about the future of law. 🎙️ Listen now: https://lnkd.in/gs5rMvc5 What’s your take? Legal is at an inflection point. AI isn’t just another tool—it’s reshaping the who, what, and how of legal work. That’s why I’m excited to speak at Legalweek 2025, where we’ll go beyond the hype and get real about how AI is fundamentally transforming legal strategy, talent, and the business of law. ▪️ What happens when AI isn’t just assisting, but augmenting legal teams? ▪️ How does the role of a lawyer evolve in a world of AI agents? ▪️ What should in-house teams be doing now to stay ahead of the shift? I'm excited to share the stage with legal industry legends Rob Beard, Farrah Pepper, and James Sheppard. Our session, “Breaking Patterns: Reimagining Legal in the Year of AI Agents,” takes its name from Mike Maples, Jr's book, Pattern Breakers—a must-read on how transformational shifts happen when we rethink the fundamental assumptions we’ve been operating under. At Eudia, we believe the real opportunity in AI isn’t just efficiency—it’s breaking the old patterns that hold legal back. The future isn’t about doing the same things faster; it’s about reimagining what’s possible. 💡 And here’s a bonus—if you attend our session, we’ll make sure you get a copy of Pattern Breakers. Because understanding the future means learning from those who’ve seen transformational shifts before. Would love to see you there and hear your thoughts. Co-Founder & CEO @ Eudia | Partnering with CLOs to fix what's broken

The CLO's moment has arrived.    For decades, legal has been viewed as a cost center—a necessary function focused on managing risk and keeping the business compliant.     That era is over.    Today’s Chief Legal Officers are leading one of the most important technology transformations in the enterprise.    Unlike other C-suite leaders, CLOs are uniquely positioned to define what AI-driven intelligence looks like in a high-stakes, highly regulated environment—where the risks are greatest and 100% accuracy isn’t optional.    And here’s the real shift:    ▪️ From Risk Management to Revenue Driver – Legal teams that embrace Augmented Intelligence aren’t just mitigating risk—they’re unlocking new strategic opportunities that directly impact the bottom line.    ▪️ From Experimentation to Execution – While other business functions are still evaluating AI, many CLOs are already delivering real case studies on what enterprise-wide Augmented Intelligence looks like in practice.    ▪️ From Adopting Software to Defining the Blueprint – This isn’t about deploying another legal tech tool. CLOs are setting the foundation for AI-driven transformation across the entire organization.    At Eudia, we’ve spent the past 18 months working closely with forward-thinking CLOs from Fortune 500 companies to architect the next era of legal.     The early results are clear: the organizations that embrace this shift will set the new standard for legal leadership in the enterprise.    If you’re a Chief Legal Officer ready to redefine what’s possible, here is your invitation to transform your department with Augmented Intelligence.

That’s why Eudia's Augmented Intelligence approach is a game-changer—our AI rapidly analyzes thousands of complex legal documents, surfacing key insights so experts can spend just minutes reviewing and catch critical issues before they’re missed. The future of legal is Augmented Intelligence!

Just heard of a law firm that fired their legal AI vendor after they missed a court date for a $100m case. In several verticals like law, health, etc, accuracy of the AI tool is non negotiable - it can be a matter of life and death or have massive financial implications.

The four eras of the legal industry. Hear from CEO Omar Haroun on how our industry's past has led our profession to the Augmented Intelligence Era. 💼 -> 💰 -> 💽 -> 🧑

Co-Founder & CEO @ Eudia | Partnering with CLOs to fix what's broken

Over the past few decades, the legal industry has undergone profound shifts—each one changing how legal teams operate, deliver value, and manage risk.  However, most have fallen short in their attempts to unlock our industry’s fullest potential. A brief word on each: The Briefcase Era – A time when legal work was simpler, information was contained, and lawyers focused almost entirely on applying judgment, analysis, and creativity. The Blank Check Era – The internet exploded the volume of data, making even the simplest tasks exponentially more complex. Law firms grew into a $400B industry as companies were forced to pay for more hours—many of which weren’t spent giving legal advice. The Software Era – The 2008 financial crisis forced companies to rein in spending, leading to the rise of legal operations, ALSPs, and software solutions. Yet, adoption remained a persistent challenge—most lawyers avoided the technology, and real efficiency gains fell short. Now, we’ve entered The Augmented Intelligence Era—one where legal teams can finally break free from inefficiencies without sacrificing human expertise. Unlike past attempts to “automate legal,” Augmented Intelligence doesn’t remove humans from the equation—it puts them back at the center. It enables expert legal professionals to operate at an entirely new level, applying their judgment and creativity without drowning in low-value, time-consuming work. This shift isn’t just necessary—it’s inevitable. And the organizations that embrace it will redefine what’s possible in legal.

ICYMI: Last week our co-founder & CEO Omar Haroun sat down with Hemant Taneja CEO and managing director of General Catalyst for the inaugural episode of the Augmented Intelligence Podcast. You can watch the full episode here: https://bit.ly/3QnubRu Some key takeaways from the conversation: 💡 AI Must Be Applied, Not Just General – Foundation models are powerful, but in high-stakes industries like healthcare and legal, specialization is the key to real transformation. 🤝 Radical Collaboration is the Only Way – No single startup, VC firm, or technology alone can fix broken industries. Long-term transformation requires rethinking business models and aligning incentives across entire ecosystems. 🚀 The Legal Industry is at an Inflection Point – Just like in healthcare, access to great legal support is deeply inequitable. AI-driven Augmented Intelligence has the potential to make high-quality legal services abundant—without compromising human judgment.
