ESIG is a nonprofit organization that galvanizes the expertise of the technical community to support grid transformation
About us
The Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG), previously known as the Utility Wind Integration Group (UWIG), was established in 1989 to provide a forum for the critical analysis of wind for utility applications. Initially focused on wind power, UWIG expanded its focus to include solar power and distributed generation and become known as the Utility Variable-Generation Integration Group in 2011. In 2018, driven by the economics and growth of renewable energy and the interdependent nature of the global energy industry, the association expanded its focus beyond the electricity system of today. These expanding perspectives around energy, and the growing need for coordination across the ways that we produce, convert, deliver and use energy, are the reasons we have become the Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG). This new positioning fulfills ESIG’s commitment to create a vibrant, compelling, and sustainable professional association that provides our members with the timely sharing and distribution of information, research, analysis, operations knowledge and peer-to-peer networking required by the changing global energy industry and the future industry landscape. ESIG does this by providing: - Collaborative thought leadership at the forefront of energy systems integration and operations. - Technically-grounded information and education without lobbying, selling or advocating. - Timely review and distribution of research on emerging technologies and practices. - Solutions that maximize asset utilization and optimize profits.

We hosted a group of early career professionals and students during the Spring Technical Workshop for a special happy hour with a challenge - build the tallest card tower! We saw some serious creativity and innovative thinking by everyone who participated, including serving tray wind shields (pictured here). The activity was a great way to break the ice and connect with other professionals in a fun and engaging way. ESIG is a great place for early career professionals to network and learn about the latest industry trends and issues. And, Students can join ESIG for free! ESIG with support from Elevate Energy Consulting, and in collaboration with Berkeley Lab and EPRI, is supporting the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) initiative to facilitate the Forum for the Implementation of Reliability Standards for Transmission (FIRST) as part of the DOE’s Interconnection Innovation e-Xchange (i2X). Join us Tuesday, April 29 for our next meeting to discuss reactive power and voltage control requirements, particularly Clause 5 of IEEE 2800-2022, focusing on specific topics such as “Vars at night,” reactive at sunrise as well as a developer's perspective on Reactive Power-Voltage Control Requirements. Register for the April 29 meeting here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ebETTSc3 🖥️ Visit the ESIG i2X FIRST webpage for meeting materials, recordings, future meeting details and agendas 👉 https://lnkd.in/ejUS8sZx FIRST convenes North American independent system operators, regional transmission operators, utility staff, generator developers and owners/operators, consultants and original equipment manufacturers interested in advancing the implementation of updated interconnection clean energy standards. The Forum is a series of monthly, interactive, virtual meetings comprised of expert presentations and industry discussions. Each meeting, focused on a specific technical aspect of the standards, addresses the rationale behind the requirements, technology readiness, best practices for conformity assessment and monitoring, and technical challenges and implementation gaps.

We took advantage of the beautiful Austin, TX, weather last week during our Spring Technical Workshop to encourage attendees to get moving and explore the city! Groups of attendees hiked to the Boardwalk at Lady Bird Lake, went on a kayaking adventure, and toured Austin’s Central Public Library. Our attendees are focused on solving massive challenges – transforming electricity grids at scale and integrating multiple energy systems to ensure reliability and affordability. We recognize the need to occasionally make space to decompress and have some fun! If you missed the Spring Technical Workshop in Austin, we hope you’ll make plans to join us for more education, networking and fun at our Forecasting & Markets Workshop in Nashville from June 24-26.
