We provided structural engineering services for the cold formed steel framing for the St. John Catholic Church in Stillwater right by Oklahoma State University's campus. This is such a beautiful building inside and out, and the student center provides a great and welcoming space for the students to engage and interact! The fact that the church is across the street from OSU's School of Architecture is icing on the cake! #gopokes

The NCSEA Summit always provides a great selection of exhibitors and sessions, and last week’s summit in Vegas was no exception! I practice heavily in the design of Cold Formed Steel (CFS), and got the chance to have a fantastic discussion with the representatives at MiTek’s booth. I was able to see a mini CFS truss with creative top chord and web members. One cool thing is that MiTek can preassemble everything including the clips. This way, the framer is only screwing the components together. Traditionally, accessories such as the clips come loose where the framer on site has to pick the clip from pile of clips that are shipped with the trusses. This removes a lot of the guess work and it provides the framer with a seamless and, dare I say, a pleasant installation experience. My colleagues and I at ENERCALC truly enjoy attending NCSEA where we meet long time users as well as engage with other exhibitors and industry leaders! See you next year in NYC!

2 weekends ago, I was at a rustic hotel with the family. The employee side entry of the hotel has a green fabric standalone canopy similar to the one in the photo. The Oklahoma wind has not been kind to the base plate. These photos show the deformation. While this has insignificant impact on the functionality of the canopy, this serves as a reminder to many engineers (especially young ones) that base plates are not infinitely rigid. (No matter what Hilti PROFIS says haha) -- 🤔 Do structural engineers check every base plate when they have moment or do they have a minimum base plate size they use everywhere⁉ #Steel #Structural #Engineering #Baseplate #OKC #AISC
