On Tuesday, President Trump signed an executive order indicating that "critical minerals... as well as their derivative products—the manufacturing goods incorporating them—are similarly foundational to United States national security and defense." The order specifically includes electric vehicles (EVs) in its definition of derivative products. https://lnkd.in/eeHu2GxG Indeed, the EV industry creates a demand for critical minerals, which are vital for U.S. national security. Critical minerals are used in everything from jet engines to missile guidance systems, but we are dependent upon foreign sources for these minerals. By developing strong domestic and allied supply chains and a manufacturing base for EVs and their components, we will strengthen our national and economic security. We encourage Congress and the administration to continue the federal EV policies and incentives that are spurring private investments in manufacturing, creating American jobs, and ensuring the U.S. auto industry remains globally competitive.

On Friday, the EC hosted a congressional briefing on Capitol Hill about the economic dangers of repealing the federal EV tax credits. Together with the Alliance for Automotive Innovation and a fantastic panel of expert speakers, we demonstrated the enormous impact the federal EV tax credits have already had on the U.S. automotive sector, highlighting billion-dollar manufacturing investments across the country, and discussed the potential consequences of repealing this critical support for the industry, including thousands of lost jobs, decreased competitiveness across the EV supply chain, and weakened economic and national security. John Bozzella, president and CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, emphasized the need to maintain both the advanced manufacturing credit, 45X, and the consumer EV credit, 30D: “You’ve got to marry that with support on the demand side. It’s that combination of things that makes this so powerful. Frankly, there aren’t enough fighter jets and submarines to consume all of those raw materials and critical minerals. You need a product-consuming business here in the United States to support that.” Michael Dunne, founder and CEO of Dunne Insights LLC, underscored the value of the tax credits as the United States attempts to dismantle China's supply chain dominance and reclaim global leadership in automotive manufacturing and innovation. Tell your senators and representatives to protect the federal EV tax credits: https://lnkd.in/gRrwYMZp Thank you to our panel—John Bozzella, Paul Corbett, Michael Dunne, Cristina Krasow, and Joe Pittel—for taking the time to join us and share their expertise during this important conversation.
