#WeTransformedTogether: Morocco FORSATY REAL Investing in youth is not just a development priority—it’s a matter of global stability. Programs that support young people to thrive and contribute to their communities become essential tools in preventing violence and building more peaceful, resilient communities. That’s the vision behind the Morocco Research for Adaptation and Learning (REAL) Program, led by EDC and launched in 2024 to work alongside USAID’s Favorable Opportunities to Reinforce Self-Advancement for Today’s Youth (FORSATY Plus) initiative. REAL aimed to effectively measure how interventions—particularly those grounded in positive youth development (PYD) can impact youth and community resilience to violent extremism. Based in northern Morocco, the program emphasized themes of individual and community resilience, data-driven decision-making, and locally led systems strengthening, and was built around three core pillars: 1️⃣ Longitudinal research to better understand how programs affect youth well-being and vulnerability over time 2️⃣ Capacity building for Moroccan institutions and partners to lead their own monitoring, evaluation, and adaptive learning efforts 3️⃣ A collaborative learning network to share findings, surface insights, and shape stronger programs and policies at the national and regional level Though the program ended suddenly in 2024, the need for this work remains urgent. Helping communities in Morocco and beyond understand what works—and why—when it comes to preventing violence and empowering youth is critical – to both local and global goals of peace and prosperity.

#WeTransformedTogether: Tisamale Mabuku Project Launched in late 2024, USAID Tisamale Mabuku or “Let Us Take Care of Books,” was designed to support Malawi’s National Reading Program by strengthening how schools and communities manage and sustain teaching and learning materials. Working in partnership with the Ministry of Education, civil society organizations, and two national partners— the Centre for Development Management (CDM) and the Malawi Economic Justice Network (MEJN)—the project aimed to foster long-term, community-led oversight of books and education resources. Though implementation was cut short, Tisamale Mabuku was able to build on the work under the Global Book Alliance in Action project to lay promising groundwork for a locally owned model of improved oversight, transparency and accountability that could scale to all schools and communities. 📍 Secured Ministry of Education endorsement and full district-level buy-in across six districts 🤝 Engaged 36 education stakeholders and identified 29 CSOs to co-design locally responsive strategies 🏫 Mapped and selected 200 area schools for community-based implementation 📝 Developed and pre-tested a national Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) survey to guide behavior change 📢 Earned endorsement from Executive Committees and Technical Working Groups in all six districts By building a coalition of educators and civil society actors, Tisamale Mabuku demonstrated a framework that empowers communities to protect and leverage effective learning materials. #Literacy #CommunityLedDevelopment #Malawi

#WeTransformedTogether: Liberia Youth Advance When young people thrive, nations do too. In post-conflict Liberia— rebuilding from years of civil war and public health crises—too many youth are left without pathways to economic participation. Launched in 2021, USAID Youth Advance set out to change that. The five-year initiative, implemented by EDC in partnership with Plan International and Resonance Global, was designed to increase economic self-reliance and resilience for 21,000 Liberians across counties of Lofa, Montserrado, and Grand Bassa. Working with local youth-serving organizations and employers, the program built locally led networks that fostered foundational skills in education, financial literacy and employment. By the time of its early closeout in 2025, Youth Advance had: 🎓 Trained over 20,000 young people with the skills, experience, support and relationships to engage with their local economies 💼 Supported more than 8,000 youth to transition into jobs or start their own businesses, in industries ranging from hospitality to agriculture 🤝 Partnered with 447 employers to offer apprenticeships and internships, with 36% of youth gaining new employment 💰 Established 350 Village Savings and Loan Associations and piloted inclusive financial literacy training 🌐 Strengthened the capacity of over 80 youth-serving organizations and helped establish three county-wide Youth Development Alliances Through these efforts, Youth Advance helped young people build not only skills—but confidence, networks, and voice. Whether launching their own tailoring shop, working in a local radio station, or pursuing leadership in their communities, Liberian youth became agents of change and proved that when systems invest in them, they invest back. #YouthDevelopment #WorkforceDevelopment #Liberia

#WeTransformedTogether: Rwanda Ibitabo Kuri Twese Literacy begins with access. But in Rwanda, limited availability and irregular supply of quality, affordable books hinder the reading journeys of too many children. USAID’s Ibitabo Kuri Twese project aimed to change that by strengthening the entire book supply chain—from policy to production to distribution. Led by EDC in partnership with Room to Read and the Rwanda Ministry of Education and Basic Education Board, the three-year, $6 million initiative focused on making books available and accessible for generations to come. Using a market systems development approach, the project worked to: 1️⃣ Strengthen the Government of Rwanda’s capacity to plan, procure, and distribute textbooks and supplementary reading materials 2️⃣ Support private book chains to produce high-quality learning materials that reflect gender equity and principles of Universal Design for Learning 3️⃣ Stimulate demand for books at home and in communities by expanding retail access Though the program was cut short, we already were successful in bringing together the government, publishers, and printers to address some barriers and map the near-term challenges and opportunities. And together, we underscored a simple truth: literacy is a system-wide opportunity. We must act together to build a more inclusive book economy to help children thrive. #EarlyLiteracy #SystemsChange #Rwanda
