Putting Real Food on the Table
About us
Eat Real Certified is a national non-profit that nourishes the future of American kids by putting real food on the table at school (access), at home (awareness), and in local and national policy (advocacy). Our award-winning K-12 certification program provides Food Service leaders with the framework and support they need to make their school menus delicious, nutritious, and planet-sustaining. Alongside our community of food system advocates, chefs, and parents, we spread the word about the power and urgency of serving real food at every meal. And we leverage our unique vantage point to push for system change, advocating for healthier policies and higher food standards at the local, state, and federal level so every child can look forward to a healthy future. Eat Real currently supports over 600 schools and 360,000 students, helping school districts improve the deliciousness and sustainability of up to 129 million meals per year.

The students at Natomas Unified School District get to eat like this every day! We are so lucky to be able to work with Natomas and their staff. From the initial assessment to Eat Real Green Certification to now ... hosting a school lunch tour to showcase their incredible meals to our community. Natomas’ foodservice director, Jennifer Orosco, and kitchen staff go above and beyond to provide meals that are delicious, nutritious, and planet-sustaining. Heroes. 👏 #ThisIsSchoolFood

We are partnering with school foodservice leaders across the state to stand up for the health of California’s students. Today, an alarming 67% of calories consumed by children are from ultra-processed foods - products that are directly linked to preventable diseases in our kids. This is where Assembly Bill 1264 comes in. 📝 This bill will eliminate the most harmful ultra-processed foods from school meals in California. This week, we had the opportunity to make our voices heard on a big (!!!) stage. Alongside other advocates, CEO Nora LaTorre took Eat Real’s message to California’s State Capitol. The message: schools can and DO serve these meals without ultra-processed ingredients. Eat Real works with school districts and food service directors across the country to make this happen. Special thanks to Eat Realie Michael Jochner from Morgan Hill Unified School District for helping us spread this message. ”As a mom and the CEO of Eat Real Certified, this moment was personal. Ultra-processed foods are fueling an epidemic of diet-related disease, and our kids—many of whom rely on school meals for most of their nutrition—are the ones most impacted.” - Nora LaTorre Huge shoutout to Miguel Villarreal from National Farm to School Network, Jesse Gabriel, the folks at Environmental Working Group, Morgan Hill's Michael Jochner, and more for joining us. Stay tuned with us as we aim to sign AB 1264 into law this year. 👏 The cafeteria can change the future. #ThisIsSchoolFood #EatRealCertified

Yesterday, I had the honor of testifying at the California State Capitol in support of Assembly Bill 1264, a landmark effort to protect children from the most harmful ultra-processed foods from school meals. As a mom and the CEO of Eat Real Certified, this moment was personal. Ultra-processed foods are fueling an epidemic of diet-related disease, and our kids—many of whom rely on school meals for most of their nutrition—are the ones most impacted. Eat Real schools prove every single day this is possible and students prefer it. AB 1264 is about protecting children's health, fueling their potential, and supporting school cafeterias to serve food that supports learning, growth, and long-term well-being. I was proud to stand alongside fellow advocates, doctors, and leaders who share the belief that every child deserves access to real food and a healthy future. This is what meaningful change looks like, and we’re just getting started. Let’s keep going. Thank you Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, your team, Scott Faber, and every lawmaker who is supporting this vision. Shoutout to Michael Jochner & Miguel Villarreal for raising your voices.

It should be EASY, after decades of wellness advocacy, to ensure that kids are served only the healthiest foods in schools — but unfortunately, that’s far from reality. Our children deserve better. They deserve fresh, nourishing meals that support their growth, learning, and long-term health — not trays filled with ultra-processed, nutrient-poor foods. Yet we continue to face barriers driven by outdated policies, industry influence, supply chain gaps, and insufficient funding. That’s why we have to keep showing up. We have to keep speaking up — for our kids, for our families, and for the farmers working hard to grow real food. I recently had the honor of speaking on behalf of National Farm to School Network school at the Assembly Education Committee hearing in support of AB 1264. I stood alongside passionate advocates Nora LaTorre Eat Real Certified Michael Jochner FSD, Kristin Zellhart and advocates from Environmental Working Group all rallying behind Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel the author of this critical bill that would remove highly processed foods from school menus. We know that healthy school meals are foundational — not only for academic success, but for a lifetime of wellness. AB 1264 is a powerful step toward aligning school food policy with what we know is right for our children. #Health #Wellness #Children #Families #Farmers #FarmtoSchool #AB1264 #SchoolMealsMatter

30 million kids eat school food every day. School cafeterias serve more than 7 billion meals a year, with more locations nationwide than McDonald’s, Starbucks, and Subway *combined* ‼️ What if we could make every one of those meals better? Eat Real districts across the country are doing just that! Because we believe every child deserves access to nutritious, delicious, planet-sustaining meals.

How lucky were we to get a first taste of brand new menu items from Western Placer Unified School District! At WPUSD, the chefs and nutrition staff aim to serve student-approved food. This is where the sticker board comes in ... 🟢🟣🟤 Students were invited to taste-test new menu items and vote on their favorites! By the end of the tasting, many boards were out of space. Let’s hear it for the blueberry coffee cake and vegetarian bean salad 💪🫐 We love that Western Placer’s staff are welcoming their students into menu development. Student taste testings provide food education opportunities and helps guarantee WPUSD is serving nutritious food that kids actually want to eat. #ThisIsSchoolFood
