As we start a new week, I have been reflecting on Dr. Paul Lawrence's testimony before SVAC last Tuesday as part of his nomination as Deputy VA Secretary. While I was listening intently on what he was saying, I was particularly struck by his emphasis on the relevance and importance of strong strategic communications to not only improve VA's relationship with Congress but also to improve VA benefits delivery processes and direct engagement with Veterans. As someone who has previously worked alongside Dr. Lawrence, his recognition that clear, effective strategic communication is vital demonstrates the kind of forward-thinking, modern leadership that will benefit VA and the Veterans it serves. His testimony reflected what I've personally observed in his work: not only a deep commitment to transparency, accountability, and operational efficiency in service to Veterans, but also an understanding of what it takes to get there. It's refreshing to see an executive leader who truly understands that purpose and benefits of effective communication. Dr. Lawrence’s leadership stands out because he recognizes what successful government executives must understand: strategic communication directly drives mission success, shapes organizational culture, and enables effective, efficient service delivery. It's not peripheral to good government – it's essential to it. And strong communication is not just about messaging – it's about driving transparency, enabling change, building trust, fostering understanding and buy-in, overcoming obstacles and resistance, and ultimately delivering better outcomes for Veterans. Dr. Lawrence’s vision for improved internal and external communication, and even recognition of the value of low-tech communication, in delivering VA benefits and services aligns perfectly with what our Veterans need and deserve.
