Another National Trust for Historic Preservation PastForward conference is done! It was a busy one for me. I presented with my Akron colleagues Dion J. Harris, PLA and Towanda Mullins about creating the Sojourner Truth Legacy Plaza. I also spoke, along with my Action Fund colleagues Alaska McInnis and Tiffany Tolbert, at the annual African American Preservation meeting, which we’ve held for 16 years. I remember when there were just a few of us sitting in a circle 10 years ago and now we have so many attendees. I also led the Action Fund field study tour where attendees could see the impact of the Action Fund by visiting our grantees in New Orleans, such as the Dew Drop Inn, St. Augustine Catholic Church in Tremé, and the TEP Center in the Lower Ninth Ward. We were joined by Michelle Brenner Shoriak of 2019 grantee Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans, who spoke about their work. The Action Fund seeded PRCNO’s Revival Grant microgrant program, which has since expanded to become citywide! Action Fund team members Leah Brown, Leslie Canaan and Gaynell B. shared insights and personal experiences along the way in a way that I felt really helped to give a people- and community-based perspective to the places that we were seeing.
