About us

Dell Children’s Foundation works with our generous philanthropic community and their passion to invest in the future of our children’s health in Central Texas through Dell Children’s Medical Center. Dell Children’s relies on support from the community to ensure our doors stay open and that no child is ever turned away regardless of their family’s ability to pay. Roughly 70% of Dell Children’s patients are under-insured or uninsured, and we could not provide the same level of world class care to every child without philanthropic support.

  • As we celebrate Doctor's Day, it's clear that the heart of Dell Children's Medical Center lies in its extraordinary team of caregivers. Their commitment to family-centered care and their dedication to working as a unified team have earned national recognition, including a prestigious U.S. News & World Report ranking for the pediatric orthopedic program. But for Dr. Hilton Gottschalk, a leading pediatric orthopedic surgeon, these achievements are about more than accolades-they're a testament to the power of collaboration and shared purpose of the physicians and staff at Dell Children's. "When a family comes to us, they aren't just getting one provider-they're getting an entire team," Dr. Gottschalk explains. "From the moment they walk through our doors, every person involved in their care is focused on one goal: helping that child and supporting their family. We're all in this together." Dr. Gottschalk's passion for pediatric orthopedics began during a shadowing experience at Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, where he saw firsthand the profound impact of compassionate care. "I fell in love with the kids, the families, and the sense of community among the medical team,” he recalls. That sense of community has been a defining part of his career at Dell Children's. For Dr. Gottschalk, orthopedic care isn't just about restoring mobility-it's about restoring hope. "Families come to us during some of the hardest moments of their lives," he says. "Our role isn't just to provide medical care. It's to guide them, reassure them, and show them they're not alone." • At just 24 hours old, William became the youngest patient in the world to receive a Berlin Heart implant, a life-saving mechanical heart pump designed to support children with severe heart failure. His journey—marked by uncertainty, resilience, and groundbreaking medical care—began at Dell Children’s Medical Center. Today, William is thriving at home with his big sister, Dani, who prayed for him every night and eagerly awaited his arrival. His recovery journey is far from over, with ongoing medical management, regular follow-ups, and lifelong immunosuppressive medications to prevent organ rejection. While the journey hasn’t been easy, the family remains grateful for the exceptional care at Dell Children’s. “The doctors and nurses at Dell [Children’s] cared for William like he was their own,” Therese shares. “We never felt alone in this journey. Their advocacy, expertise, and compassion made all the difference.” For families facing a similar diagnosis, Jeff offers this advice: “This is the hardest thing you’ll ever go through. But life is precious, and there’s hope even in the darkest moments. Trust your medical team, lean on your faith, and take things one step at a time.” To read William’s incredible story visit https://lnkd.in/ewKevE75

  • To look at her, there is almost no way one can tell that this bouncing and gleeful preteen was admitted to Dell Children’s Medical Center in dire need of a new heart. For a healthy 10-year-old girl full of energy and curiosity, nothing about Olivea seemed out of the ordinary. However, her life took an unexpected turn when she began experiencing symptoms that puzzled her family and doctors alike. At Dell Children’s, the cardiologists at the Texas Center for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease delivered a shocking diagnosis—Olivea was in heart failure. For the Hannah family, this news marked the beginning of a challenging journey, one that would test their strength and resilience and forever change them. On March 1st, 2024, Olivea was admitted to Dell Children’s Cardiac Care Unit, where she began a 95-day inpatient stay. Despite the gravity of her condition, Olivea’s spirit remained unbroken. Known for her infectious positivity and compassion, she quickly became a beacon of light within the Cardiac Care Unit. The waiting period for a heart transplant is always filled with uncertainty, but Olivea faced each day with unwavering grace. On May 23rd, the long-awaited call came: a suitable donor heart had been found. The news brought immense relief and hope to the Hannah family. The transplant procedure performed by Dr. Carlos Mery and Dr. Chesney Castlberry went smoothly, and Olivea’s recovery was remarkably swift. By June 6th, she was back home, ready to embrace life as a normal 10-year-old girl. Olivea Hannah’s journey is a testament to the power of courage and positivity. Her story demonstrates that even in the darkest times, the human spirit can and will triumph—she is the queen of our hearts and we couldn’t be more proud to announce that she will be representing Dell Children’s Medical Center as both our Art of Giving Ambassador and our Children’s Miracle Network Champion in 2025. • Dell Children's Medical Center is honored to announce the Sewell Family Endowed Chair in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology. This newly endowed position is the result of a generous multi-generational $2 million gift led by Josie and Carl Sewell, Ill and their family to Dell Children's Medical Center (DCMC). Inspired by the care their son, Connor, received in our cardiac center, the Sewell family's gift will leave a lasting impact on pediatric cardiac care for generations to come. The Sewell Family Endowed Chair will be held by Dr. Erin Gottlieb. Dr. Gottlieb is a distinguished physician, Dell Medical School-University of Texas full-time faculty member and one of a few women program leaders in the highly specialized field of pediatric cardiac anesthesiology. This most prestigious chair will support Dr. Gottlieb's vision of exploring new knowledge and educating tomorrow's leaders in this critical specialty. "Dr. Gottlieb is an inspiration, not only to me but to so many women in medicine. She's broken barriers in such a niche and technical field, and her passion for mentoring the next generation of female doctors is remarkable. Supporting this endowed chair is about more than honoring her work —it's about ensuring that her legacy of excellence, compassion, and leadership continues," said Josie Sewell, Dell Children’s Supporter and Connor’s Mom (Dell Children’s Heart Patient). With this endowment, Dr. Gottlieb will have the resources to expand and enhance her life-saving work in pediatric cardiac anesthesiology, advancing Dell Children's nationally ranked heart center. • Each year, thousands of families in Central Texas receive the news no parent wants to hear—your child has a serious, life-threatening disease. For these families, the words that often follow are difficult: Your child’s best chance of survival lies elsewhere. At Dell Children’s, we’re committed to ensuring that the children in our community and their families do not have to hear these words or leave home for lifesaving care. With community support, Dell Children’s continues to invest in people, facilities, and technology as we take a giant leap toward becoming one of the top-tier pediatric institutions in the country. In our annual Impact Report, we are honored to celebrate the accomplishments of the Dell Children’s HERE Campaign for Growth, with a focus on the achievements of this most recent year. This moment is historic for Dell Children’s as we look to the future to ensure our pediatric ecosystem is HERE to stay for generations to come.
