Steel-ing the Spotlight at NASCC 2025! 🏗️🔩 From presentations to conversations, Degenkolbers near and far had a rewarding experience at this year’s NASCC: The Steel Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. It was a great opportunity to connect with industry professionals from around the world and exchange insights on the latest in steel building. With over 270 technical sessions and more than 300 exhibitors, the conference was packed with innovative ideas and valuable learning experiences. Our team had the privilege of both attending and presenting, engaging with designers, fabricators, and researchers at the forefront of steel innovation. 💡 The NASCC conference is always more than just an event—it's a chance to learn, collaborate, and grow alongside colleagues across the steel industry. We look forward to continuing these conversations and applying the ideas and inspiration gained to our projects moving forward. Thanks to everyone who made this event possible, and we’re excited to see where the industry goes from here! #NASCC2025 #SteelConference #DegenkolbEngineers #InnovationInSteel #StructuralEngineering #SteelIndustry

This is not your average construction site! This past Saturday, Degenkolb had the opportunity to be part of ACLA Architecture for Communities Los Angeles (ACLA)'s Design by Diversity Day at Pasadena City College. It was a day of hands-on fun, as we connected with future architects, engineers, and builders, all while fostering collaboration and innovation! 🏗️💡 Our team from Degenkolb—Allison Acosta, Aram Subramanian, Daniel Phelan, Dennis Chiu, Dhawal Desai, S.E., P.E., and Laura Basualdo, S.E.—had a fantastic time connecting with attendees and inspiring the next generation of designers, engineers, and architects! At our booth, we had an array of TinkerToys where attendees could collaborate and build a shared structure upon our base foundation. From balancing challenges to creating more stable foundations, it was incredible to see both children and adults get creative, work together, and push the limits of their imagination. To encourage participation, anyone who added at least three pieces to the structure received a raffle ticket for a chance to win a building set. It was a great way to engage and inspire everyone to dive into the world of structural design! We’re proud to be part of such a diverse and engaging event, helping to open doors for students of all ages interested in the world of architecture, engineering, and construction. Huge thanks to ACLA for hosting this amazing opportunity for learning and community building! 💫 #DesignByDiversity #ACLA #Degenkolb #AEC #STEM #BuildingTogether #CommunityEngagement #FutureArchitects #Innovation #StructuralDesign #Mentorship #PassionForBuilding

Building the future, one little library at a time! Our Degenkolb engineers had a blast mentoring high school students at ACE Build Day, where creativity and construction skills came together for a memorable, hands-on project. 🏠 At the event, Degenkolbers worked side by side with students, providing them with an authentic construction experience while helping them build something truly meaningful. Aram Subramanian’s team, representing the Girls Academic Leadership Academy (GALA), took a creative twist by designing a murder mystery-themed little library! 🔍📚 With the generous support of Swinerton (who supplied the wood and materials) and DEWALT (who provided the tools), the students brought their unique vision to life. Each team had the choice to build either a playhouse or a little library, with provided plans, pre-cut wood, window frames, door frames, and other materials. The magic unfolded as the students painted, detailed, and assembled everything from scratch. At the end of the day, these incredible projects—including our murder mystery library—will be donated to communities across Southern California, leaving a lasting impact. A huge thank you to ACE Mentor Program of America for putting on this event—and a massive shoutout to the amazing students for their hard work and enthusiasm! We can’t wait to see how these little libraries bring joy to their new homes. #ACEBuildDay #STEM #STEAM #Mentorship #CommunityImpact #Construction #LittleLibraries

Degenkolb’s Matthew Barnard recently participated in a SEAOSC (Structural Engineers Association of Southern California) Leadership Symposium panel, "Employee Retention & Engagement." Check out SEAOSC’s post for more insights on the discussion!
Closing out this year’s Leadership Symposium, Kimberly Guzman of Buehler led a discussion on Employee Retention & Engagement with panelists Matthew Barnard, SE, of Degenkolb Engineers, Molly Pobiel, P.E. of Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH), Claire Leader of Martin/Martin, Inc, and Natalie Tse, SE, LEED AP (she/her) of Tipping. The conversation tackled challenges for engineers navigating their early careers, emphasizing the importance of work-life balance, self-advocacy, and empathy in the workplace. Natalie highlighted the need to give yourself grace and ask for company-provided resources, while Molly reminded attendees that taking time for yourself ultimately benefits both the employee and the firm. Matt stressed the importance of understanding that everyone’s balance looks different and practicing empathy for others’ choices. The panel also discussed how organizations can foster a supportive culture, from building connections outside the firm to creating spaces where both employees and leadership can be vulnerable. Companies that recognize and appreciate their employees see better engagement, stronger retention, and long-term success. Addressing high stress and low compensation, the panel encouraged engineers to advocate for their value, communicate effectively with clients, and work towards licensure to elevate the profession. Matt summed it up emphasizing that what we do is built on integrity and trust—that will help the value of our work shine through. 📸 Photos courtesy of Annie Chen, Hilti North America.

Last week, in celebration of Women in Construction Week, our Degenkolb team members Holly Razzano, Heavenz Kaur, PE, SE, and Lucie Fougner toured 2118 Milvia Street, the future home of Berkeley City College’s new academic hub—a project that Holly and Heavenz helped design. Hosted by XL Construction, the tour highlighted the outstanding contributions of the all-female leadership team guiding this project forward. As the structural engineers on this progressive design-build project, we’re proud to see this six-story, 60,000 s.f. facility come to life. Designed to support students and faculty with modern classrooms, dedicated workspaces, and an open rooftop deck, the project exemplifies the power of collaboration and innovation in the built environment. A big thank you to our project partners at XL Construction, Kitchell, and Ratcliff Architects—and to the inspiring women shaping the future of construction! 🏗️ #WomenInConstruction #StructuralEngineering #BerkeleyCityCollege #HigherEducation
