  • As we approach Easter, many Black preachers in Houston are reflecting on the significance of the resurrection in the face of ongoing political turmoil and attacks on Black humanity. Historically, Black preachers have used Easter to address the realities of the present moment, often interpreting the resurrection as a rebuke of state power, a symbol of the Black Messiah, or a call to activate a resurrected faith. Dr. Timothy W. Sloan, senior pastor of The Luke Church, is using the Easter sermon series to explore mental health through the emotions and resilience of Jesus. He emphasizes that mental wellness is a critical issue that needs to be addressed, and that faith can help individuals overcome anxiety, betrayal, rejection, and trauma. Ed C. Jones III, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, is also addressing the mental and emotional well-being of his congregation. He believes that faith can help individuals overcome the fear and uncertainty that often accompany political and social upheaval. As we reflect on the Easter resurrection, it's clear that the themes of renewal, unity, and empowerment are more relevant than ever. How do you think these themes can be applied to our personal and collective lives in this challenging time? https://lnkd.in/gQ9GjUzf #easterreflections #blackpreaching #resurrectionpower #faithandmentalhealth #blackhumanity

  • In today's societal landscape, the 50/50 mindset in relationships remains a contentious issue, particularly for Black women. The expectation that women should contribute more to household responsibilities and emotional labor is often rooted in gender roles and societal norms. This invisible labor can lead to burnout, stress, anxiety, and even physical health issues. The problem with the 50/50 mindset is that it often leads to imbalance, with both partners feeling like they're pulling more weight. This can result in resentment and a lack of recognition for the efforts of Black women. It's essential to recognize where these beliefs come from and challenge them, recognizing that being a good partner or parent does not mean doing everything alone. In order to break this cycle, we must unlearn traditional expectations placed on Black women. This includes setting boundaries, prioritizing mental health, and ensuring that efforts are recognized and reciprocated. It's time to shift the narrative and view labor as a collaborative effort, rather than placing an unfair burden on one gender. What are your thoughts on the 50/50 mindset in relationships, and how can we work towards a more equitable approach to household responsibilities and emotional labor? https://lnkd.in/gy4SZxct #50/50mindset #invisiblelabor #blackwomen #genderroles #societalnorms

  • The impact of the Donald Trump tariffs on the American economy has been significant, causing uncertainty and volatility in the stock market. This has resulted in millions of Americans nearing retirement being forced to make difficult decisions, as their 401k plans have seen a substantial decrease in value. The tariffs, or the threat of tariffs, on other nations such as China, Canada, Mexico, and England have led to a domino effect on prices, imports, and exports, causing a ripple effect on the economy. This has resulted in Americans holding off on their retirement plans, as their retirement funds have taken a hit. In a recent episode of the Defender Roundtable, we discussed the challenging decisions faced by those nearing retirement due to the stock market volatility. Houston attorney and economist Carroll Robinson joined the panel to provide insights on stock market volatility and potential strategies to protect oneself. As we navigate this uncertain economic landscape, it's essential to consider the long-term implications of such policies. How do you think the Trump tariffs have impacted the American economy, and what steps can individuals take to protect their retirement plans? Your thoughts and experiences are valuable in this conversation. https://lnkd.in/g5wkmave #trumptariffs #stockmarketvolatility #economicimpact #retirementplanning #401k

  • In a tragic and heart-wrenching turn of events, former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy has passed away at the age of 24. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Texas, Lacy died by apparent suicide following a police pursuit in Houston. His father, Kenny Lacy, issued a poignant statement on Facebook, expressing the immense grief and sorrow that now fills their lives. Lacy, once considered one of the most promising wide receivers in his class, had recently declared for the NFL Draft. His promising future was cut short, leaving the sports world and his family in a state of disbelief and profound sadness. This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support, particularly for young athletes who may be struggling with more than just their physical performance. It is a call to action for us all to be more vigilant and compassionate towards those who may be in need. Let us remember Kyren Lacy for his potential, his talent, and his life. His story will continue to inspire us to care for one another and to be there for those who may be struggling. https://lnkd.in/gA3Q-Tjv #kyrenlacy #mentalhealthawareness #tragicloss #ripkyrenlacy #athletementalhealth

  • Dr. Kelly LeBlanc, a Black senior leader at Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital, is shaping the future of healthcare. The newly opened facility is among the first in the country to be fully integrated with AI, ambient listening, and 5G-ready infrastructure. LeBlanc's leadership is about more than machines and smart tech; it's about representation, resilience, and creating space for others to rise. Her journey to leadership was not straight. After completing her residency at Baylor College of Medicine, she took a temporary step off the partnership track due to personal circumstances. However, she persevered and re-entered the partnership track, with support from her family and colleagues. Today, LeBlanc is determined to not be the only one at the top. She focuses on both mentorship and sponsorship, regularly mentoring medical students and residents. Her mission is to help build a culture that values innovation and inclusion. As the hospital grows, LeBlanc's vision is to create a safe environment for patients and a supportive culture for staff. Her leadership is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of building a culture of inclusion in healthcare. What are your thoughts on the importance of representation and inclusion in healthcare? How can we work together to create a more inclusive and supportive culture in healthcare? https://lnkd.in/gFam3Yez #healthcareinnovation #aiinhealthcare #5gready #blackleadership #representationmatters

  • The culinary scene in Houston is experiencing a significant transformation, with a surge in the number of Black-owned restaurants. These establishments are not only serving up delicious soul food and barbecue but are also offering fine dining experiences that attract visitors from across the country. The city's vibrant food scene is so popular that reservations at these restaurants often need to be made weeks in advance. To celebrate this growth, Houston is currently hosting its Black Restaurant Week, which provides the perfect opportunity to explore the city's diverse culinary offerings. Among the notable restaurants is Sip and Sweets, owned and founded by Christina Letsinger. • Marvin Pierre, a South Jamaica, Queens native, has made a significant impact in the education sector. Growing up in a low-income environment, Pierre faced challenges that many students in similar situations encounter. However, his journey took a pivotal turn when he attended a boarding school in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and found guidance in Dr. Sam McFadden. Pierre's mentorship and experiences led him to launch a career on Wall Street, but he eventually transitioned into education, focusing on helping disconnected youth. He founded 8 Million Stories, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting formerly incarcerated and "at-promise" youth in Houston, Texas. Through 8 Million Stories, Pierre has been instrumental in reviving hope and understanding students' experiences, rather than solely focusing on GED or vocational certification. The organization's impact is undeniable, with many alumni bringing new students into the fold. Pierre emphasizes the importance of training school safety officers to see kids as students, not criminals, and educators who build relationships rather than write kids off as "bad." He believes that real change starts with school policies and mindsets, and encourages us to consider how we can make a difference in the lives of young people. What do you think is the most significant challenge facing today's youth, and how can we work together to address it? https://lnkd.in/g5tk8sBR #marvinpierre #empoweringyouth #8millionstories #youthmentorship #educationreform

  • Texas universities are facing a significant challenge as the Trump administration intensifies its crackdown on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. The U.S. Department of Education has warned that institutions risk losing critical funding if their programs violate anti-discrimination laws, forcing universities to re-evaluate how they implement DEI initiatives. The U.S. Department of Education has announced investigations into multiple universities for alleged race-based discrimination, citing concerns over admissions, scholarships, and student programs. The Trump administration's stance signals a broader effort to dismantle DEI initiatives in higher education, with universities that fail to comply with federal directives potentially losing Title IV student aid, curriculum development funding, and other financial support. Civil rights groups, including the Legal Defense Fund, argue that the Trump administration is misapplying the Supreme Court's ruling to push an agenda of "colorblindness" that erases programs meant to support historically marginalized students. A coalition of more than sixty civil rights organizations has sent a letter to the Department of Education demanding that the guidance be rescinded, arguing that it threatens equal education opportunities. Texas universities, particularly historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), are facing a significant threat of losing funding due to Texas Senate Bill 17, which prohibits DEI programming in public universities and federal guidance that weaponizes Black institution history. Educators are feeling the effects of the crackdown, with many feeling restricted in their ability to conduct research and support students. How are Texas universities responding to this challenge? What measures are being taken to ensure that DEI initiatives continue to support students of color and promote inclusivity on campus? https://lnkd.in/gV4fQ6TU #texasuniversities #deipolicies #educationchallenges #titleiv #civilrights

  • The Prairie View Panthers football team is embracing a new era of intensity and discipline under the leadership of head coach Tremaine Jackson. In his first spring practice, Jackson is emphasizing the importance of "violence" on the field, which he defines as the physical and mental energy required to play a violent game. This new approach is being adopted by the team, with players being held accountable for their actions and attitude both on and off the field. Jackson is focusing on building a culture of discipline and accountability, with players required to be on time and follow instructions to the letter. The team is also seeing significant changes in the way they play, with a new set of expectations and a renewed sense of purpose. Despite losing some players to transfers, the Panthers are excited about the 19 new mid-year transfers who have joined the team, including Valdosta State transfers Ty Brown and Sterling Roberts. The team is also looking forward to additional additions in the transfer portal. In the quarterback room, the Panthers are seeing significant competition, with five players vying for the starting position. Jackson is confident that the team will emerge stronger and more disciplined by the time fall camp starts. As the Panthers prepare for the upcoming season, one question remains: who will be the starting quarterback? https://lnkd.in/gDtJdjjt #prairieviewpanthers #newera #coachtremainejackson #footballintensity #teamdiscipline

  • The Wheatley High School 4x100-meter boys relay team has achieved a remarkable feat, advancing to the Area round for the fifth consecutive year. This achievement is attributed to the perfect blend of raw talent and teamwork among the four senior team members: Jacorey Bonner, Joseph Andrews Jr., Nazier Elder, and Arzjon Hawkins. Coach Lionel Kinsey III praises the team's chemistry and skill, highlighting their potential as one of the best groups to ever attend Wheatley High School. The team's success can be attributed to strategic shifts, such as Bonner moving to the first leg, which has proven to be a game-changer. The relay team's performance is a testament to their dedication and focus, with each member bringing their unique strengths to the track. Their goal now is to reach the state meet, a feat they are well-equipped to achieve with their current performance and potential.
