Protecting First Amendment rights has been a cornerstone of our practice for decades. Yesterday, on behalf of 27 American Jewish organizations, we moved to file an amicus brief, objecting to the arrest, detention, and potential deportation of Tufts grad student Rümeysa Öztürk, who was apprehended on the street last month and is being held in an ICE facility in Louisiana. As the amicus brief explains, it is well settled that our Constitution secures to all students and scholars, including noncitizens, the right to peacefully express political beliefs. Handling this matter pro bono is a DWT legal team led by Robert Balin, Linda Steinman, Jeremy Chase, Victor Kovner, and Adam S. Sieff, with support from Abigail Everdell, Rachel Goldberg, Jesse Feitel, James Rosenfeld, Rachel Strom, Alison Schary, Nathan Siegel, Eric Feder and Megan Duffy.

We are excited to welcome Alix Town to our Real Property team as Counsel in our Portland office! Alix brings extensive experience from her previous role as Senior Corporate Counsel for a national commercial construction company, where she developed strong experience in federal procurement and government contract matters. As our construction practice continues to grow in the Northwest and California, one of four states where she is barred, Alix will be a key asset in advising stakeholders across the sector, from owners to subcontractors. Her expertise in federal, state, and local contracts, along with related litigation, will be invaluable as we navigate complex challenges and opportunities ahead. Welcome, Alix!

A contigent from DWT, including Senior Director of Innovation Dan Szabo, was so pleased to provide mentorship to the brilliant minds blazing trails toward the future of AI and #legaltech. Thank you CodeX, The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics, Dr. Megan Ma, and all the judges, mentors and participants for the eye-opening opportunity.
400 builders were buzzing in the rooms of Stanford Law School at the Stanford LLM x Law Hackathon this past Sunday. 80 diverse teams —combining lawyers, coders, business specialists, and college students – gave final pitches to the judging panels of VCs, and AI and legal tech industry leaders. 50 teams competed in the new build track, and 30 in the VC judging track (for startups and ongoing projects). Kudos to my dear friends and main organizers Dr. Megan Ma and Pierre-Loic Doulcet. It was lightning in a bottle for 12 amazing hours. I walked for 2-3 hours inside the cavernous hallways of Stanford Law school to help mentor teams. At every turn—in classrooms, conference rooms, even on chairs in the hallways—I found 1-7 person teams huddled on laptops and whiteboards. Each team had a single-minded focus on building legal AI startups ideas, and maybe even the next unicorn, with the aim to reinvent the future of law. The finalists and winners: - Gov Match (Best Overall winner): multi-agent system to help SMBs find the best RFPs for government contracts, and also draft and submit complete, compliant proposals - Finiti (Best project - VC track winner): help lawyers by using AI agents to execute corporate transactions end-to-end, starting with a risk disclosure benchmarking and drafting tool - Clause Clarity: use AI agents to streamline legal contact analysis, identify fairness/bias, and sentiment with precision - JurisLink (Jus Mundi challenge winner): use LLMs and a knowledge graph to identify parties with conflicts of interest in international arbitration matters, and identify waivable and unwaivable conflicts - Arb Litt Up (Scorecard winner & Bloomberg Challenge winner): LLM tool to match plaintiff and defendant arguments, and quantitatively score the strength of arguments, to allow lawyers to strenthen their case - Saga AI (DWT Challenge 1 winner): actors/entertainment professionals can navigate complex SAG-AFTRA contracts and understand rights using an agentic RAG tailored for these documents - ClaimHero: AI-driven solution to help users submit appeals for the medical claims denials process, understand their coverage and chance of success, and advocate for their appeal Our new Lawyers Counsel program had 14 attorneys whom gave 1-on-1 sessions to dozens of teams to help find lawyers pain points to address with AI solutions. Congratulations to all teams participating this year—each of you has the potential to develop the next game-changing innovation in the legal space. Thanks to CodeX, The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics and the sponsors, judges, and mentors for providing unwavering support to this community of builders. As I shared In my opening talk, I am especially excited about how AI innovations could expand legal services to the vast majority of society who have been underserved (such as lower & middle income individuals, and traditionally underrepresented groups) and also to small and medium-sized businesses across the globe.
