We couldn't be more proud of our inaugural robotics team, winning multiple "rookie" awards as the only middle school team in a high school robotics competition with FIRST in Michigan. They head off to the Michigan State Championship this weekend in Saginaw. Go Jaguars! #DAASPride Thanks to DAAS Staff Calvin Nellum, M.Ed and Amber Le'Shea for helping bring this to life!

🎉 Detroit Writes Detroit Recap 🎉 Last Thursday, we celebrated the incredible creativity and talent of Detroit’s students at our Detroit Writes Detroit event! 🌟 📚 This year’s theme, “Detroit Dreams Big: Opportunity and Education in the D!”, provided an opportunity for students to reflect on their dreams, the challenges they face, and the unique opportunities available in Detroit. Through essays, poems, and artwork, students beautifully articulated their perspectives, showcasing the power of storytelling and art in shaping their future and our community. ✨ Highlights from the event: • Students shared moving stories of resilience, creativity, and hope, reflecting their dreams for Detroit and how education can empower them to achieve those dreams. • Educators, families, and community members came together to support and celebrate the voices of our young leaders. Their encouragement reminded us of the collective power we hold to uplift the next generation. • The event became a space to acknowledge the challenges students face while highlighting solutions that can strengthen Detroit’s educational landscape. At Teach For America Detroit and TeachMichigan, we are honored to amplify these voices and champion the brilliant minds shaping the future of our city. Events like Detroit Writes Detroit remind us why we’re committed to our mission: to build an equitable and thriving education system for all. 💙 Thank you to everyone who made this event possible and to the students who inspire us every day. Beyond exciting to feature the artwork of Trae IsAAc, a proud DAAS alum, in another special place in our school! If this isn't #DAASPRIDE, we don't know what is!
Throughout my creative journey I’ve accomplished a few personal milestones, including having large scale artwork at my old boxing gym (Crowell Recreation Center), murals near my residence (T’Mos BBQ on McNichols), and my own touch of color at my elementary school Alma Mater; Detroit Academy of Arts & Sciences. I was privileged with the opportunity to paint their basketball court featuring an original rendition of their school mascot and school colors. This project was immensely special to me as I get to create a symbol of pride for the staff and students of the school. Definitely grateful to start the year with such a special project🙌🏽🎨

We are so grateful for Ms. Chala Hannon and her contributions to our team and scholars! #daaspride
After spending nearly a decade in the IT field, Chala Hannon found her true purpose teaching at Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences(DAAS), a charter school on Detroit’s eastside. 💻 From leading after-school coding programs to championing workforce readiness, Chala empowers her students with skills for the real world. Her initiatives—like taking young girls to STEM events and integrating tools like AI and Google Classroom—help close learning gaps and build confidence. 🧪👩🏾🔬 “Exposure cultivates curiosity,” Chala says. Her dedication proves that when students have opportunities and support, anything is possible. Read More: https://lnkd.in/ebFc6vzS #ChartersLead #GirlsInSTEM #InnovationInEducation
