  • 🔴 Today, we honor the memory of Fred Eversley (b. 1941, Brooklyn, New York), a key figure in the development of contemporary art in Los Angeles during the postwar period. Eversley passed away on March 14, 2025. Based in Venice Beach for over five decades, he synthesized elements from various art historical movements associated with Southern California, including Light and Space. However, his work was the product of a pioneering vision all his own, shaped by his lifelong studies of the timeless principles of light, space, time, and gravity. Before becoming an artist, Eversley was an engineer who collaborated with NASA and major aerospace companies to design high-intensity acoustical laboratories, which led to his interest in the parabola. Honor Eversley by watching his virtual lecture at Crystal Bridges through the link in bio and come see “Big Red Lens” before the gallery transformation starts on Monday, March 24: https://bit.ly/4iz6ul9 🎨 Frederick Eversley, “Big Red Lens,” 1985, cast polyester, 40 x 40 x 6 in. • Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Emma Amos (1937–2020), a trailblazing painter, printmaker, and weaver. 🎨 Amos used bold colors and layered textures to challenge boundaries, exploring race, gender, and identity in her art. Her piece “The Reader” (1967) is currently on view in our Contemporary Gallery, a beautiful example of her vibrant storytelling. • Exciting news for our campus 🎉 Yesterday, Heartland Whole Health Institute announced that it will open to the public on May 1, inviting the community to explore its 85,000-square-foot space designed by Marlon Blackwell Architects.   Nestled within the 134-acre Crystal Bridges Campus, this landmark building blends architecture, art, nature, education, and wellness, embodying a whole-health approach to well-being. Inspired by the Ozarks’ natural beauty, its design enhances the connection between people and place. We’re thrilled to see this vision come to life and can’t wait to experience it firsthand.

Today, Heartland Whole Health Institute announced that it will open to the public on May 1, welcoming members of the media and the community to explore this 85,000-square-foot structure that brings together architecture, art, nature, education, and wellness offerings on the 134-acre Crystal Bridges Campus. Designed by Marlon Blackwell Architects, the Institute building is inspired by the natural landscape of the Ozarks and features curvilinear forms that respond to the sense of place of the museum’s campus. Heartland Whole Health Institute, founded in 2019 by philanthropist Alice Walton, works with the health care industry in developing a whole-health approach that considers the needs of the whole person with the goal of preventing disease, improving health outcomes, and sustaining wellness. “This building embodies the key elements of whole health – integrating our physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being,” says Walton. “It’s surrounded by nature, with trails that invite exploration, and is designed to bring people together to learn, engage, and connect. Marlon Blackwell Architects has created a landmark building that will welcome our community and beyond, enhancing the experience of visiting the Crystal Bridges Campus.” “Designed from the inside out and the outside in, Heartland Whole Health Institute is both a platform for and physical realization of the Institute’s mission to move health beyond illness treatment and into wholistic well-being,” said Ati and Marlon Blackwell, founding Partners of Marlon Blackwell Architects. “Its spaces, materials, and forms, drawn from the site’s karst topography and Ozark forests, enhance the connection to nature and place, and create an atmosphere to nurture the whole self.”

  • “The only thing I can paint is just what crosses my mind. I don’t want to paint what everyone has already painted. I want to paint something that nobody has.” - Clementine Hunter 🎨 Hunter, a self-taught Black Creole artist, mother, and farm laborer from Louisiana, did not start painting until her late fifties. Unlike academically trained artists who might use fruit bowls or posed figures as subjects, Hunter was a memory painter. Every scene she painted came directly from her mind. In “Baptism,” Hunter painted one of the many community events she celebrated with her neighbors. Baptism candidates (in green) march from St. Augustine Catholic Church down to the Cane River, a favorite landmark in Hunter’s paintings. In fact, the very first of her paintings depicts a similar scene. Read more: https://bit.ly/3R2l8FG 🖼 Clementine Hunter, “Baptism,” 1950s, oil on board, 18 × 24 in.
