About us
Made up of the fifteen municipalities on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the County of Barnstable was founded in 1685 and is one of the oldest Counties in the United States. The County of Barnstable is a special place, requiring special protection and special services managed cooperatively for the benefit of each community. This narrow land has a unique place in the national historical narrative and has been defined by the limitations and expanses of land and water. Cape Cod has always had one foot in the past and one foot in the future. The County of Barnstable focuses its attention on regional issues and resources that impact our coastal waters, environment, and public health and safety. We work hard to develop programs that educate and inform our residents. Our departments are vibrant and active across the Cape and beyond, providing information, support, and advocacy for environmental issues, technology innovation, emergency preparedness, and more. It's day four of National Public Health Week! The theme for 2025 is "It Starts Here" and recognizes the importance of organizations like the Barnstable County Department of Health in Environment in advocating for healthy communities. Our Public Health Nursing Division includes a contract epidemiologist and three community resource coordinators, whose role is infectious disease surveillance and case investigation for foodborne illness. The goal of disease investigation is to stop the spread of disease, identify how much disease is in a community, and educate the public on how to prevent illness. #capecodgov #NPHW https://loom.ly/VcT4AOw

During Child Abuse Prevention Month, Barnstable County would like to share this important message from Children’s Cove, a department of Barnstable County, encouraging parents and caregivers to #havetheconversation about body safety with children of all ages. For younger children, this might mean using correct names for body parts and talking about what parts of the body are private. For teens, it could mean discussing consent, boundaries, and healthy relationships. Whatever the age — take the time to #havetheconversation today. It's day three of National Public Health Week! The theme for 2025 is "It Starts Here" and recognizes the importance of organizations like the Barnstable County Department of Health in Environment in advocating for healthy communities. A vital function of our Public Health Nursing Division is health outreach and education. One aspect of this is "Tick Talks", where a public health nurse visits local schools throughout Cape Cod and teaches elementary school-aged children how to identify and avoid ticks and prevent tick bites. These engaging presentations are specifically tailored for our youngest residents, encouraging them to have fun, ask questions, and learn potentially life-saving information. #capecodgov #NPHW https://loom.ly/VcT4AOw
