If you missed the Copyright + Technology conference last September, I am proud to announce that the latest issue of the Journal of The Copyright Society includes transcripts of all of the sessions. As co-editor of this issue along with Editor-in-Chief Elizabeth Townsend Gard, and as a new member of the Journal's Peer Review Board, I can assure you that the transcripts have been edited and footnoted to within an inch of their lives. Web versions are available to all; Copyright Society members can download the full issue in PDF. The conference featured panels on #AI and blanket licensing; #AI and attribution; #AI and the overabundance of online content; and compulsory licensing (nothing to do with AI). Featuring Tom Rubin's keynote plus Dave Davis, Umair Kazi, Rachel Fertig, Roanie Levy, Danielle Bulger, Nicolas Gonzalez Thomas, Leonard Rosenthol, Jenni Katzman, Will Kreth, Olena V. Ripnick-O'Farrell, Anna Gressel, Adrian Perry, Diaa El All, Arthur Levy, Kristelia García, Kerry Mustico, Colin Rushing, Adam Parness, and myself.

For R&D driven companies, understanding the data around an article can be just as crucial as the content itself. Whether working in medical affairs, clinical affairs, R&D, or on competitive intelligence teams, researchers are challenged to find the most relevant content in an ocean of scientific literature. The ability to surface critical connections between authors and content is key for identifying relevant research and accelerating speed to insights. Q: What should we as a rightsholder do if we learn after an event that a presenter included our copyrighted content in their slide deck without our permission? CCC reached out to Leslie Lansman, Global Permissions Manager at Springer Nature, based in the UK, for her perspective on this reader question. "If you see you or your organization’s content being reused without permission or being reused in a way that goes beyond the terms of any existing license, you should check with your legal team to determine their general policies and typical responses to handling these types of issues. Different companies have different policies in place and it’s important to work with your team to ensure a consistent approach..." While some journal publishers have been addressing AI (or, at least text and data mining) for more than a decade, many organizations are at the earliest planning stages regarding their AI strategy. However, the American Psychological Association (APA) has been consistently ahead of the curve in addressing the implications of AI as a publisher, a licensor, and a user. During The London Book Fair, Roy Kaufman of Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) moderated a session entitled, "The Power of Licensing & Responsible AI – A Proactive Path for Publishers." During the session, he had the opportunity to interview Aaron Wood, Head of Product and Content Management for APA, about its multi-faceted approach to AI and the change management it engenders. Roy was especially excited about this interview, given the APA’s comprehensive approach to AI. The following CCC Velocity of Content blog post is adapted from the talk 👇 https://lnkd.in/e6snntC9
