  • Below the waterline, bridge foundations face a constant battle against scour, corrosion, and gradual deterioration—challenges that often go unnoticed without routine inspection. Left unaddressed, these issues can lead to safety concerns, costly repairs, or service disruptions. That’s why the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requires inspections at least every 60 months, with more frequent evaluations for higher-risk structures. To support agencies and bridge owners, the FHWA recently updated the Underwater Bridge Inspection Manual and Underwater Bridge Repair, Rehabilitation, and Countermeasures Reference Manual. These updates offer best practices for assessment, documentation, and remediation. “These manuals support the people doing the work—from the inspectors, who are also divers, to engineers and owners planning the next repair strategy,” says Consor Structural Assessment Executive Director Jeff Rowe, who co-authored both manuals. 🔗 Read how these updates support safer inspections, smarter repair strategies, and stronger communities: https://lnkd.in/g_mmeVDW #bridgeinspection #commercialdiving #bridgepreservation

  • Communities today face increasingly complex environmental challenges—from protecting clean water and species at risk to navigating overlapping permitting requirements. Consor is building out an environmental practice to help our client partners address these realities with clarity. Led by Kerry Winkler, Jeff Novotny, and Heather Melcher, our growing team brings deep experience in NEPA documentation, permitting, ecology, impact assessments, habitat compensation, and more. With a presence in both the United States and Canada, our team supports infrastructure projects from early due diligence through construction and long-term monitoring. “We’re building a team that understands how natural systems work and how to design around them,” says Heather Melcher, Vice President Environmental Permitting & Planning. “It’s not about adding complexity—it’s about helping clients find smarter, more resilient ways forward.” Stay tuned for an upcoming article spotlighting our Canadian expansion, with an initial focus on environmental services. Interested in growing with us? Connect with Kerry (Central US), Jeff (Eastern US), or Heather (Canada) on opportunities to join our environmental team. #environmentalservices #NEPA #permitting

  • In 2024, over 58 million passengers traveled through Harry Reid International Airport (formerly McCarran International Airport)—one of the world’s busiest airports. Supporting this traffic is a network of infrastructure, including the Harry Reid Connector tunnels. Running beneath the taxiways, these complex tunnels enable the seamless movement of vehicles, planes, people, and essential services. Our team recently supported the Nevada Department of Transportation in conducting regular inspections and mechanical assessments to monitor the tunnel’s condition and identify potential maintenance needs. From detecting delamination in the concrete liner to examining lighting fixtures and checking for loose wall tiles, these inspections are an integral step in structural preservation. Because tunnels are both structures and machines, they require a detailed inspection approach. Tunnels are designed to support immense loads while housing important mechanisms that maintain air quality, temperature regulation, and smoke control in the case of emergencies. These systems are crucial not only for passenger safety but also for preserving tunnel integrity by controlling degradation from environmental effects.   Go behind the scenes with our team as they help maintain a safe experience for travelers—from arrival to departure! The seven-person crew worked overnight to minimize impacts to the traveling public, using hydraulic lifts and specialized concrete and steel inspection tools to efficiently collect the required condition data. #structuralassessment #tunnelinspection #consorprojects

Provo City’s Epic Sports Park is living up to its name! With more than 330 local sports teams and just 11 existing sports fields, Provo needed additional recreational space. The solution? A thoughtfully designed 100-acre sports facility featuring 22 fields tailored for national tournaments and local play, ready to host up to 1,800 people per hour. Here’s what makes this project truly epic: ⚽ The irrigation system features a looped mainline that allows multiple valves to run simultaneously and reduces the field watering time to 10 hours. A pure sand topsoil profile also enables play within one hour of a storm event. 🌱 Environmentally friendly design that features a wildlife preservation area and bioswales in the parking lot for stormwater management. 🚦 A traffic signal, roundabout, and 80 parking spots per field that manage traffic flow for visitors and the community. Strategically located near Provo Airport, this park is projected to generate $30 million annually in economic impact, making Provo a hub for sports tourism. Our team supported the City by delivering the master planning, stormwater and roadway design, and all construction documents for the park, as well as materials testing. #consorprojects #sportspark #roaddesign #parks #stormwater #irrigation #planning Video courtesy of Provo City.

  • California’s Mediterranean climate is becoming more extreme—longer dry spells punctuated by intense storms with stronger atmospheric rivers. For infrastructure like the El Camino Real Bridge over Santa Margarita Creek, that meant increased strain from flooding, which caused debris buildup, flow restrictions, and higher scour risk for foundations. To address these challenges and enhance resilience, the County of San Luis Obispo Department of Public Works replaced the aging bridge with a design that minimized supports within the creek, improved hydraulic performance, reduced scour risk, and integrated the Nacimiento Waterline. The project was delivered with funding support from the FHWA Highway Bridge Program. In addition to design, our team supported the County with environmental clearances, permitting, and construction support. Watch the video to see how an innovative temporary bridge alternative kept traffic moving during construction in an accelerated delivery window! Shout out to the County staff, Souza and Souza Construction, Inc., SWCA Environmental Consultants, Avila and Associates Consulting Engineers, Inc., Kleinfelder, and Consor’s design and construction services teammates for collaborating to deliver this future-ready bridge! #consorprojects #bridgeengineering

As communities embrace more sustainable, accessible, and connected modes of transportation, electric bikes are reshaping how people move through urban spaces. AJ Fisher, PE a transportation engineer at Consor, recently co-authored a resource for ITE—A Community of Transportation Professionals. This feature explores strategies to help agencies adapt policies and infrastructure to the rise of e-bikes—covering everything from classification systems to integrating them into active transportation and transit plans. 🔗 Read Quick Bite: Considerations for E-Bikes in Policy, Planning, and Design: https://lnkd.in/gxgD5csj #multimodaltransportation #transportationplanning #transportationengineering #ebikes

  • Glaciers store approximately 68.7% of the world’s freshwater—but they’re disappearing rapidly. Beyond rising sea levels, changing meltwater flows cause floods, droughts, and landslides. This upcoming #WorldWaterDay, the United Nations Water is highlighting the importance of glacier preservation. Our #waterresources team helps our client partners navigate these climate impacts through resilient infrastructure planning. A climate scientist and resiliency expert, Michael McMahon equips decision-makers with essential data-driven insights. Creating cost-effective, long-term solutions that protect resources and communities facing these challenges fuels his passion. “In 1982, I visited the Columbia Icefield between Banff and Jasper in the Canadian Rockies. This ice field is the source of the Athabasca Glacier, which reached the marker in the image below 117 years ago. The shrinking glacier is a very real manifestation of the evolving climate patterns that are profoundly impacting the environment of this region and water management as far away as Edmonton and Calgary. Their rapid melting at a rate of about 16 feet (5 meters) a year will have long-term impacts on water supplies, agriculture, industry, and ecosystems. The time is now to promote research on glaciers and climate adaptation, as well as advance policies that protect them.” – Mike McMahon, Technical Practice Manager, Resiliency #climateadaptation #climateresiliency #waterresources
