After more than a decade of underfunding and federal funding in doubt, our communities are in crisis. Connecticut nonprofits and the people who depend on them are facing uncertainty and it is important that state government protect our most vulnerable residents. Community-based nonprofits contract with the state to provide a wide range of behavioral, developmental, community justice, shelter and other human services to thousands of people across the state every day. The General Assembly and the Governor have approved some increases in recent years, but after two decades of underfunding, nonprofits today have 30 percent less buying power than they did in 2007. This year, nonprofits are seeking a $264 million increase for FY26 and we need your help. Please like and share.

The Alliance for Nonprofit Growth & Opportunity (TANGO) hosted their first Women Take the Lead event of 2025 at the New Britain Museum of American Art this week. Speaker Marlia Fontaine-Weisse, Vice President at Tangible Development, facilitated a discussion on the challenges and opportunities facing women leaders today, focusing on Resilience, Inclusivity, and cultivating equitable opportunities for future leaders. During the event, TANGO’s Director of Operations & Marketing Rob Bloomstone made a shout out to the CMHA table – where we had not one, but two, prior recipients of TANGO’s Rising Star Award. Prior to joining the team at CMHA, Thais Ortolaza the first-ever recipient to receive a scholarship from TANGO to support her educational pursuits. In 2019, Sol Karnuk was nominated by CMHA and received the Rising Star Award while she was pursuing her B.S in Business Administration (focus in Healthcare) at Southern New Hampshire University. Along with Thais Ortolaza and Sol Karnuk, CMHA’s Jessica Cestaro, Alyssa Hunter, and Meaghan McFall Gorman attended.

🚨 Nonprofits are at a critical crossroads! This week, many key bills moved through legislative committees at the Capitol, and CMHA’s Meaghan Gorman (Development & Community Engagement Coordinator) testified before multiple committees to advocate for essential funding. 🔹 Right now, an Appropriations Committee hearing is underway—expected to last over 13 hours with 300+ people testifying. Our message is clear: Connecticut cannot continue to underfund critical nonprofit services. 📉 The Governor’s proposed budget adheres to ‘fiscal guardrails’ but reduces bond funding opportunities for nonprofits and leaves us with hundreds of millions of $$$ less in social services compared to last year (CT Mirror, 2/28/25). With one-time ARPA dollars depleted and no new allocations, nonprofit health and human service providers face an alarming funding crisis. 💙 Our clients, our staff, and our communities deserve better. We must work together to demand change. ✊ How You Can Help: ✅ Contact your legislators—share how nonprofits like CMHA impact your life. ✅ Stay informed on key bills and advocacy efforts. ✅ Visit our Advocate for Nonprofits page for resources! Let’s raise our voices and fight for the funding our communities need! #FundNonprofits #AdvocateForChange #CMHA
