Updates

  • Each year, nearly 40% of food in the U.S. goes to waste. At the same time, 32,000 neighbors in our area are food insecure. Fighting food waste means we can protect the planet AND nourish our community at the same time! Food is sent to Lakeshore Food Rescue for a variety of reasons. Thanks to our partners who also don’t want to see food wasted, we’re able to redirect items to families in our community! Last year, this meant 3.7 million pounds of food were diverted from the landfill - most of it going to neighbors through Food Club or our network of nonprofits partners, and a small portion fueling local food production as compost! Visit https://loom.ly/C1rUmFw to learn about the life cycle of rescued food, how you can reduce food waste, and ways to join the movement to end food waste, fight hunger, and mobilize community!

  • Happy Earth Month! We believe that when you nourish the earth, you nourish the community. Environmental challenges hit hardest for those already struggling. Sustainable practices are core to our mission and our service - we believe that building a stronger, healthier planet is an essential part of building a stronger, healthier community! 💚🌎 One of the most impactful ways we can protect the planet is by reducing food waste. Each year, nearly 40% of food in the U.S. goes to waste. We’re working to change that – through our Lakeshore Food Rescue program, we rescued 3.7 million pounds of food in 2024 alone, thanks to our community’s generosity and collaboration! • Have you heard of Mac-and-Cheese Ministries? Charlie, powered by his love for macaroni and cheese, founded this non-profit when he was in fifth grade! From organizing a 5K, hosting donation drives, and even speaking at TedXMacatawa, Charlie has already made a mark on our community. Mac-and-Cheese Ministries recently donated 2 pallets of macaroni and cheese to our Lakeshore Food Rescue program! That adds up to more than 6,000 boxes that will be distributed to over a dozen regional pantries. Nourishing our community can start at any age - thank you Charlie and Mac-and-Cheese ministries! Read an article about Charlie's work from our friends at the Holland Sentinel: https://loom.ly/P7oFx1E

  • At Action House, one of the main ways we source food for Food Club is through generous community donations. This year, we’re celebrating a new level of partnership with Revolution Farms! While they’ve supported Lakeshore Food Rescue in the past, helping us turn excess food into food access, they’re stepping up this year as regular donors, making sure our neighbors can access fresh, locally grown greens year-round. We’re so grateful to Revolution Farms for helping us build a stronger, healthier community! Want to learn more about how we rescue good food and get it to families who need it most? Check out our latest blog and see how businesses, volunteers, and partners like Revolution Farms are building a future where our neighbors can thrive! https://lnkd.in/ewyTHUDi

  • We’re expanding our hours at Food Club! Thanks to the continued support of the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area and so many others in our community, we’re able to extend our shopping hours on Wednesdays. Kicking off tomorrow, March 26th, our Wednesday Food Club hours will now be 9:00am-4:00pm! We still need volunteers to help sustain this growing service! Last year, 31 first-time families signed up for membership on average each week. Help us continue providing healthy food, resource connection, and financial empowerment by signing up for a volunteer shift! Visit https://lnkd.in/gShaUhsg

  • Thank you to the Michigan West Coast Chamber of Commerce for the opportunity to discuss the power of collaboration and partnerships. Together, we can create a stronger community for everyone.

At Wake Up West Coast today, Scott Rumpsa, CEO of Community Action House, shared data-driven insights on collaboration, highlighting real-world examples of the power of partnerships. This collaborative mindset makes our community unique, and attendees left with actionable steps to foster it in their workplaces. • ♻️ Today is Global Recycling Day! Recycling isn’t just about plastics and paper—it’s about food, too! Every year, millions of pounds of edible food are wasted, filling landfills and releasing harmful methane into the atmosphere. Through Lakeshore Food Rescue, we’re turning potential waste into nutritious meals for our neighbors instead. A win-win for our planet and community! By rescuing surplus food from local grocery stores, farms, and restaurants, we’re helping families access healthy food, AND reducing food waste and its impact on the planet. Last year, volunteers and community partners helped us rescue 3.7 million pounds of food—keeping it out of landfills and putting it on tables where it belongs. 🌎💚 Learn more about food rescue, and how you can join us, by visiting, https://loom.ly/pIzarvU

  • Have you seen these blue coats around town? Then you’ve seen our Housing Access & Outreach team in action! Since 2017, our Outreach team has been actively seeking out neighbors experiencing homelessness– looking for people who need a partner, friend, and expert to help navigate the complex process of finding housing. Last year, our team helped 118 neighbors find safe housing– the most ever in a single year. Each story is unique, and the result of the determination, hope, and hard work of our guests– with our team right alongside them. By getting to know them, building trust, and meeting critical needs first, we partner with unhoused neighbors to build a foundation for progress and pursue long term stability. And all of this work happens alongside a network of partners who are committed to building a stronger, healthier community. Next time you see them, say hi! Or visit https://lnkd.in/gT5kWHnw to learn how you can support their work through our Amazon Wishlist!
