We’ve all heard about “microplastics” and the risk they pose to human and ecological health, but “nanoplastics,” which are 1/50th the thickness of an average human hair, are a much smaller and potentially more worrying issue. Nanoplastics are far more reactive, far more mobile, and vastly more capable of crossing biological membranes than microplastics. Yet, because they are so tiny and so mobile, researchers don’t yet have an accurate understanding of just how toxic these particles are. Until now: A new study, authored by Baoshan Xing of the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at UMass Amherst and an international team, describes a reliable, efficient, and flexible tool that can quantify nanoplastics’ concentration in a given sample and analyze which specific plastics that sample contains. As climate change intensifies, native plants will need human help to move into adjacent areas, a process known as “managed relocation.” New research from a pair of ecologists at the College of Natural Sciences at UMass Amherst provides a detailed sense of which plant characteristics will help ensure successful relocation while minimizing the risk that the plant causes unwanted ecological harm. David Boutt of UMass Amherst Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences is the senior author of a new paper examining freshwater availability for lithium mining being conducted in the “Lithium Triangle” of Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia—the source of more than half of the world’s lithium resources. This research shows that the commonly accepted models used to estimate how much freshwater is available for lithium extraction, and what the environmental effects may be, are off by more than an order of magnitude. "There’s not much new freshwater coming into these systems,” explains Boutt. “We found all but one of the 28 basins in our study should be classified as ‘critically water scarce,’ even without incorporating current, to say nothing of future, demands on the water supply." Talented graduate students wowed the crowd at the 2025 Three Minute Thesis competition, an international speaking competition where students had just three minutes to present their groundbreaking research to a general audience. From developing new tools for cancer treatment to improving access to clean water, finalists tackled real world challenges with clarity, passion, and creativity. A big congratulations to all this year’s participants, including Cristina Hirschbiegel for taking first place. Buzzards Bay, off the coast of southern Massachusetts, is a beautiful place for sailing and other forms of recreation. But something is troubling scientists just beneath the surface. Data from sensors suggest that a major monitoring program has been missing 40% to 50% of low-oxygen events. These events can suffocate marine life, disrupt food webs, and lead to "dead zones" where few organisms can survive. “The New Bedford Light” recently examined this work and describes how University of Massachusetts Amherst scientists such as Anita Milman, professor in the College of Natural Sciences at UMass Amherst’s Department of Environmental Conservation, are involved in the effort. 🌟 Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Amherst introduce a color-writable polymer film based on the fluorescence of embedded cesium lead halide nanocrystals (NCs)! 🟦 🟩 🟥 The emission color of each NC is dependent on its halide composition, allowing for tuning via photocatalyzed halide exchange with a co-embedded organohalide. 🔬 Targeted illumination for color-writing is demonstrated using a Nikon AX R #Confocal #Microscopy system. 🔗 Check out the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ePc_JMmS #Microscope #Imaging #SciComm #Nanomaterials
