Can a college course change the way we see our community? Let’s ask the marvelous Maya Pai, a senior #PublicHealth major. Her freshman year, Maya took an Honors course taught by Morgan Hughey called Zip Code or Genetic Code – What Decides Our Health? The course solidified Maya's interest in public health and served as a springboard for community-building opportunities, including… • An Honors Immersed study investigating #park access policies in 25 cities across the U.S. 🏞️ • An Honors study abroad experience examining the differences between #healthcare systems in Portugal and the U.S. ✈️ • An Honors bachelor's essay research project exploring women’s experiences returning to #academia after childbirth. 🏫 “[Maya] exemplifies the values of the College as a lifelong learner and will brighten your day whenever you see her,” says Dr. Hughey. “I look forward to seeing the impact Maya will continue to have in her career after graduation.” We agree! Jon Sealy is a literary maestro who just released his fifth book, The King Street Affair, last year. But the College of Charleston English major and Honors alum didn't always imagine a future in writing. ✍ Jon's journey began in the town of Six Mile, SC, as the son of an engineer and a social worker. His choice to attend the College didn't take much deliberation; as he puts it, "You only have to visit Charleston once to really fall in love and feel like, 'Oh, this is a good place to be.'" While he began his education thinking he'd major in math or physics, it took one English class for him to discover his true passion. Guided by bestselling author and professor Bret Lott, Jon was able to hone his craft. "I'm lucky to have been a witness to his passing through my life on his way to being the writer he is today," says Lott. Today, Jon lives in Richmond, VA, with his wife—who he met at the College—where he both consults and writes. His books are a testament to the tireless and nonstop work he's put in since finding his calling. You can read more about Jon's impressive work and journey here: https://lnkd.in/gapv3pjQ.
